Extractions: The Odyssesy gives a list of people living on Crete; among that group he lists are the "Eteo-Cretans," who are probably the original Minoans. This group persists as an independent group until around 140 BC; their language, Eteo-Cretan, was probably a near relative of the language of the Minoans. The Greeks called non-Hellenic languages "barbaric," from the word "barbar," which means "speaking nonsense" ("bar bar bar bar"). They called people who spoke barbaric languages, "barbarians"; so the Greeks in many ways distinguished themselves from other people by the language they spoke. The Eteo-Cretans, then, originators of Greek civilization itself, had become the barbarians in the Greek world. bureaucratic monarchies . While the government was dominated by priests and while the monarch seemed to have some religious functions, the principle role of the monarch seemed to be that of "chief entrepreneur," or better yet, CEO of the Cretan state. For the Cretans operated their state as a business, and entrepreneurship seemed to be the order of the day. While the bulk of the population enjoyed the wealth of international trading, the circumstances of that trade was tightly controlled from the palace. Beneath the king was a large administration of scribes and bureaucrats who carefully regulated production and distribution both within the state and without. This administration kept incredibly detailed records, which implies that they exercised a great deal of control over the economy.

Extractions: When comparing Greek and Roman sculpture you need to know about the three distinct periods of Greek sculpture. The Greek Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic styles each represent different ideals. Archaic, best represented by the Kouros, evolved from Egyptian sculpture. Kouros characteristics were: rigidity, one foot forward stance, formal hair treatment, bilateral symmetry (same on left and right), and its frontality (block like). It differed from the Egyptian in that the sculpture was nude, there was no webbing between the arms and body, and there was attention to anatomical detail. The Archaic Kouros was the composite of the athletic ideal through mathematical formula(1:8). It was not realistic, but idealistic. During Classical period, the change in sculpture was embodied by one word: controposto . The most significant change in sculpture to that date, controposto was the counterbalance, or s-curve of the body. One foot came forward and the weight distribution became more naturalistic. Besides conroposto, the other characteristics of Classical sculpture were: head turned on different plain from body (aloof, representing reason controlled) and less formal hair treatment. Archaic was carving "stone into body", while Classical was carving a "body out of stone". "The Canon", by Polyclitus, is the archetype of classical sculpture. The goal of classical sculpture was to portray a perfect balance and harmony through art. This mirrored Greek philosophy.

Extractions: Mysteries of the Minoans The Minoan civilization, based on the island of Crete, achieved political and economic dominance of the Eastern Mediterranean at their height of power. They were a sophisticated culture that was generally peaceful and enjoyed the profits of a healthy trade economy. Trading ties existed to Egypt and the Turkish coast, as indicated in the writings on Egyptian temples and by artifacts found. They have also been linked to the Atlantis legend (see Akrotiri) described by Plato. After the Minoan civilization collapsed, the Mycaneans from the mainland filled the power vacuum. Greece is seismically active, and a series of quakes may have helped to spell the doom of Minoan civilization. All of the palace sites, which were unfortified, have repeatedly burned down. The palaces were not fortified either. Earthquakes can cause fires to start from cooking fire, oil lamps (may have used beeswax lamps though, not olive oil as suspected earlier), etc., although the Minoan usually rebuilt. Finally, some series of events overtook the Minoans, and they never did fully rebuild from that calamity. Go to the ruins of Akrotiri on Thera.

This body of water is a branch of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bounded by the Greek mainland on the west, Asia Minor (now Turkey) on the east, and the island of Crete on the south. Here, while the rest of Europe was still in the Stone Age, the Minoan-Mycenaean peoples achieved a highly organized Bronze Age culture. Two different civilizations flourished in this region from about 3000 BC to 1000 BC . Extractions: CENTRE FOR THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE In the ancient world, disease and health were of great importance to everyone and had a major impact on how people lived their lives, what they ate and drank, and how they coped with illness and death. The response was nearly always the same, whether in Egypt, Western Asia, Greece and the Aegean, China or the Indus Valley; it was the emergence of healing and medicine in all its forms - rational, magical and religious. The Centre has a developing specialist research focus in the history of ancient medicine and the study of palaeodisease and palaeonutrition, and aspects of both form an integral part of its teaching programme at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our approach is unique for the study of ancient medicine at a UK university, in that it involves an interdisciplinary study of the subject - not just the textual sources - but including palaeopathology and the archaeology of medicine. In doing so, we bring together scholars from differing academic backgrounds - classics, medieval history, ancient history and archaeology. One of the principal roles of the Centre is to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision. In this teaching ancient medicine has a high profile and both the history of medicine teaching for the MB/ChB, the BMedSc (History of Medicine) degrees and the taught postgraduate programmes contain elements of ancient medicine. More specifically, the following undergraduate module (which will also be available to students of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology and others) is in course of preparation and should be available for the academic year 2002-2003:
