Extractions: Economic growth and development in Minnesota depend, in part, on the availability of local sources of minerals for use in industry and manufacturing and for maintaining and upgrading transportation networks. Raw materials, such as sand and gravel, are needed by State agencies and private industrial and construction firms to construct roads and buildings. To ensure continued growth and development of industry, new sources of construction materials and other mineral resources must be identified because existing supplies are limited and because land-use constraints rule out exploitation of some geologic resources. Minnesota not only contains identified resources of iron, copper, and nickel, the State also has potential for developing gold, zinc, platinum, and other minerals of local, national, and global importance. Extraction and processing of these mineral resources could form the basis for enhanced local and regional economies. The USGS is developing an integrated digital geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and mineral-resource database and assessment of undiscovered mineral resources in the State. This database can be used to address regional land use, environmental, and mineral-resource issues. A recent product, prepared in cooperation with the Minnesota Geological Survey, is the digital geologic bedrock map for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Maps and reports in digital and paper form assist Federal, State, and local land-management agencies to ensure adequate supplies of minerals at low cost and to promote sound management of the region's substantial mineral resources.

Census tract data were available for these cities for 1940 through 2000. However, the 1950 and 1970 tract data for the Twin Cities are not yet available in digital format, so no maps are provided for those years in the Twin Cities. Also please note that more counties were tracted by the Census Bureau for later decades. For example, only the areas within Minneapolis and St. Paul city limits had tracts in 1940; whereas in 1980 both cities entire counties, as well as some surrounding counties were fully tracted by the Census Bureau. For the presented maps, areas that did not contain tracts are shaded white. Series 1: Percentage of Population Age 65 and Over (Twin Cities, Minnesota

Extractions: high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions: New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma. The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Geography Plays A Part In Responding To Disaster From east to west, geography demands that Red Cross staff So what can minnesota chaptersdo to when floods exodus of people moved into other cities and into http://www.disasterrelief.org/Disasters/980318geography/
Extractions: Posted on Fri, 27 Mar 1998 13:06:24 GMT Written by Jennifer Brill, DisasterRelief.org Writer The California mudslides are expected every year, though not to the extent that residents saw in the winter of 1998. Disaster relief took on a new meaning as workers sought to cope with the state's crumbling terrain. From east to west, geography demands that Red Cross staff pay special attention to the needs of local residents. When a city copes with the aftermath of a disaster, the American Red Cross local chapter is ready to respond specifically to that city's needs. American Red Cross chapters tailor their response to emergencies that are different in each region of the country. Keeping an alert watch for weather hazards is part of each chapter's service to local residents. Los Angeles The unique thing about earthquakes is that theres no warning, says Peggy Brutsche in Los Angeles. We have some general predictions of probability levels. But that's all. The Los Angeles Chapter of the Red Cross combines disaster services, international tracing and military social services, a system that relays messages between members of military families.
Extractions: Metadata created using Minnesota Geographic Metadata Guidelines Originator Metropolitan Council and The Lawrence Group (TLG) Abstract The Lawrence Group, under contract with Metropolitan Council, created a 1990 Census Bureau block polygon dataset for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington Counties). This dataset is coincident with and developed using the TLG Street Centerline and Landmarks databases where 1990 block boundaries fall on those features. For those block boundaries that are defined by features not included in TLG databases, TLG used other digital resources to generate these boundaries, such as orthophotography or additional features from city and county GIS databases. TLG used it's best judgement to digitize block boundaries when the block boundaries followed nonvisible features or street extensions.

Extractions: A Look at the 2000 Minnesota Salary Survey Do geography and industry influence wages for personal care and service workers? The 2000 Minnesota Salary Survey can help provide answers to this question. To examine the influence geography can exert over wages, this article considers three representative occupations for personal care and service workers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul seven-county metropolitan area (defined in this article as Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties) and in the "Balance of State," which in this article is defined as all Minnesota counties outside of the seven-county Twin Cities area. In order to be certain that differences in mean wages are not simply a result of sampling procedures, the occupations discussed are those with sizable employment and which exhibit a statistically significant difference in mean wages. Industry impact on wages is also examined using the same three occupations in the state.
