    Extractions: Most rocks are made up of silicate mineralsin fact, with the exception of limestonevirtually all rocks are silicates. The basic building block of the silicate structure is the silicate tetrahedrona pyramid-shaped unit with one Si at the center surrounded by four oxygen atoms. These tetrahedra link together and combine with additional elements such as Fe, Al, Ca etc. to form the different silicate minerals. The important silicate mineral groups are organized into a scheme called Bowen's Reaction Series. BRS indicates the order in which minerals would crystallize out of a basaltic magma, and shows that (for the most part) the early-forming, high-temperature minerals are those with simple structures, while the latest-forming, lowest-temperature minerals have the most complicated structures. Minerals that occur near each other on BRS also occur together in igneous rocks. Minerals high on BRS are called mafic and so are the rocks that they form. Mid-level minerals are intermediate; the lowest minerals are felsic and form the felsic igneous rocks.

Hatfield Geologic information: The Marysvale area is dominated by Tertiary igneous rocks ranging from intermediate to silicic compositions with both volcanic and plutonic representatives. The especially thick volcanic section is thought to be the result of a large stratovolcano complex and associated calderas that existed during mid-Tertiary time. One of the common units found near Marysvale is a white to dark gray rhyolite with extremely well-developed flow banding. The crystals, which are found in cavities in the rhyolite, formed in gas pockets that were trapped in the lava flow as it cooled. Bixbyite, a rare iron-manganese oxide, occurs as black, metallic, euhedral crystals up to 3/8 of an inch across. The crystals are generally complex combinations of various isometric forms including cubes, octahedrons, and dodecahedrons. Rutile is less common and appears as needle-like or bladed crystals up to 1/4 inch long.

    Extractions: Utahite is a hydrated copper-zinc-tellurate hydroxide found on the dump of the Centennial Eureka mine in the Tintic mining district in Juab County. The mineral is found isolated or in groups as elongate crystals in small vugs with drusy quartz. Individual crystals are up to 0.3 mm long, prismatic, and are subhedral to euhedral. Utahite is pale blue in individual crystals or blue-green in aggregates. Utahite has a vitreous to pearly luster and a pale blue streak. X-ray studies reveal a triclinic symmetry. Utahite is nonfluorescent under ultraviolet light and is brittle with an uneven fracture. The mineral has a hardness of 4-5 and a density of 5.34 g/cm3. Utahite is found in association with cesbronite and other Cu-Zn-Te-bearing secondary minerals on quartz. Utahite is named for the state where the Centennial Eureka mine is located.

The deformation commonly causes the veins to show complex fabrics. Quartz formed in the cracks The quartz veins were formed by the filling of open fissures and display little evidence of significant replacement of wall rock. Milky quartz crystals and associated vein minerals of the Ouachita Mountains were deposited from hot waters during the closing stages of mountain building, ranging from the Late Pennsylvanian (300-286 million years ago into the Permian (286-245 million years ago). The veins attain a maximum width of 60 feet in Arkansas and nearly 100 feet in Oklahoma. They are most numerous along the central core of the Ouachita Mountain region, where they are present in shale, slate, sandstone, and other rock types. Along and near the borders of this region, the veins are usually confined to sandstone beds encased within thick shale units.
