Developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and integrated by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), the MSG was launched to the ISS in June 2002. This facility offers an enclosed 255-liter work area that is accessible to the crew through sealed glove ports and to ground-based scientists through real-time data links and video. Because the MSG work area can be sealed and held at a negative pressure, the crew can manipulate experiment hardware and samples without the potential hazard of small parts, particulates, fluids, and gasses escaping into the open laboratory module. With modern equipment and careful field procedures it is now possible to measure gravity changes as small as 1 part in 1,000,000,000. Changes in gravity measured at the earths surface reflect the underlying geological structure, hence the accurate determination of gravity leads to an understanding of the ground beneath. It has been established that microgravity is an accurate and reliable method for detecting underground cavities, both natural and manmade. The application of this technique however is not restricted to void detection. High resolution gravity has been used to monitor fluid flow in oil and geothermal reservoirs and to monitor aquifer recharge and depletion. During the experiments, the aircraft cycles between g and 2 g in a parabolic trajectory. The high incidence of motion sickness has earned the aircraft the nickname "Vomit Comet." Under the supervision of APL-UW Senior Physicist John Wettlaufer, Lisa Couret and 1998 Hardisty Scholar Dorothy Caplow, both physics majors, conducted an experiment to determine what happens when a drop of fluid hits a fluid surface. The experiments were designed to investigate the effect of gravity on the transition between splashing and coalescing drops and the effect on the characteristic "crown of thorns" produced by a splashing drop. The characteristic shape and evolution of the resulting space depend on the balance of capillary, inertial, and gravitational forces. Under microgravity conditions, the effects of surface tension dominate, and the resulting interplay between capillary and inertial forces can create effects impossible in 1 g . Because of the complicated, nonlinear nature of the problem, these effects are difficult to model or predict beforehand.

Extractions: What is Microgravity The term "Microgravity" is really a misnomer. The force of gravity in low Earth orbit is more than 90% of the force of gravity at the Earth's surface. To reach a point where Earth's gravity is reduced to one-millionth of that on Earth's surface, one would have to be 6.37 million kilometers away from Earth (almost 17 times farther away than the Moon). A spacecraft in orbit, however, is in a state of free-fall that produces weightlessness. A circular orbit results when the centripetal acceleration of uniform circular motion (v2/r; v = velocity of the object, r= distance from the center of the object to the center of the Earth) is the same as that due to gravity alone. In other words, the gravitational force acting on the spacecraft center of mass is balanced by the centrifugal force produced in the orbital trajectory. The acceleration of a payload within the spacecraft relative to the spacecraft itself is reduced orders of magnitude compared to g (9.8 m s-2). At the center of mass of the spacecraft the acceleration is reduced to zero (neglecting atmospheric drag). So, more accurate terms would be "free-fall" or "near weightlessness", but the term "microgravity" has stuck. Both external and internal forces give rise to accelerations at points within the spacecraft.
