Extractions: General Education courses are an important component of the AAS degree option. Whereas completion of the vocational training requirements demonstrates competency in the area of specialty, completion of the General Education requirements demonstrates a competence in oral and written communications, computation and human relations in the workplace. General Education requirements vary for each degree program as described in the degrees section. Transferability of General Education credits earned at Renton Technical College is subject to the policies of the receiving institution. Individual courses are described below. Prerequisites : General Education courses in writing and math require acceptable scores on the COMPASS test. Students should complete the test at least two weeks prior to registering for a writing or math class. The scores will be used to advise students on appropriate coursework. Students may schedule the COMPASS test by calling the Registration Office at (425) 235-2352. Anatomy and Physiology I - BIO 141 - 5 CR This course builds upon Anatomy and Physiology I survey course continuing with advanced physiology, advanced cell biology, and disease processes. Areas of focus include neurotransmitter/hormone release, response by muscle cells, and glands. The circulatory mechanisms throughout the body, fluid and electrolyte, acid-base, portal circulation, immunity and disease processes are covered. Online laboratory experience is driven within directed home experiments and web based opportunities. On campus laboratory includes experience in the lab including histology, biochemistry, dissections, and cadaver utilization. BIO 141

Extractions: If you're like many microbiology students, you may be taking this course because it's required for a nursing, dental hygiene, or other health career program. While taking the course, you may have discovered that you enjoy problem-solving and working in the lab, and that you are fascinated by science. This careers feature will introduce you to some other career opportunities in the fast-growing fields of microbiology - occupations you may not have considered or even have known existed. Microbiology, including Industrial microbiology/biotechnology and bedical/health care Technology, is one of today's most rapidly developing sciences, and a degree in this field can open the door to many different and interesting occupations. What is industrial microbiology? Industrial microbiology is the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, and viruses) or other biological agents to create useful products for the benefit of humanity. What kind of work does an industrial microbiologist do?

Extractions: This course deals with the properties of the major human pathogens, their mode of pathogenesis and treatment and the host's immune response. It has six major sections: immunology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology and infectious disease. Immunology, bacteriology, virology and parasitology may be taken separately. This course is a comprehensive presentation of all the families of animal viruses with specific emphasis on molecular mechanisms of virus infection and virus-cell interactions. Classes include lectures as well as reading and discussion of primary papers. The course covers topics such as virus entry, viral DNA or RNA replication; transcription; translation; virus assembly and release; persistence; latency; effects on host macromolecular metabolism; cell lysis; interference; and viral immunology for each family of viruses. The emphasis is on basic principles as well as experimental design. R. Welsh. Fall, 3 credits. Prerequisite: Graduate Core Molecular Biology or equivalent

This paper describes Microbiology 125 - Microbiology for the Health Sciences , a multimedia, interactive distance education course was designed to be delivered over the Internet, and supplemented by a CD-ROM of video, audio and multimedia materials. The course, given over four terms as a half course each term, examines basic microbiology principles and the agents involved in infectious diseases. Students learn the types of agents, how they cause disease, how they are transmitted and principles of treatment. All instructions, assignments, correspondence and interaction (student/teacher, student/student, student/teaching assistant) took place via the Internet, either by an asynchronous web conferencing system, or by e-mail. Realizing that students access the Internet through a variety of modems and connection speeds, the audio images, animations and video components of the course were burned into a CD-ROM which was distributed upon registration. For most distance education students at this time, downloading large video and animation files from the Internet would be expensive and slow.
