Extractions: Students receive training in fundamental principles and applied aspects of Microbiology. The undergraduate program includes a wide range of courses in the physical, chemical and biological sciences. In the final year, each student undertakes a research project in an area of microbiology or related field of their interest, in the laboratory of one of the researchers. It is during this period that invaluable hands-on laboratory experience is gained, essential to any career in science. Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, as the name implies. It encompasses the study of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. Research into the life processes of microbial cells in such diverse fields as biotechnology, food safety, water pollution, soil fertility, human and animal diseases involves many disciplines of science. Indeed, many fields of science interact with the discipline of microbiology: medicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, ecology, genetics and molecular genetics, cellular biology, and many more. For these reasons, microbiology is often considered to be an interdisciplinary science; as such, it allows each student to focus on the fields that are of the greatest personal interest.
