The Virtual Field Trip Have your students take virtual field trips across the state of Michigan during the month of May, 2004. Fourth grade students across the state of Michigan will have the opportunity to share the uniqueness of their area with other students. Field trips last 45 minutes, with each classroom presenting for 15 minutes of the scheduled exchange. The student presentations will be focused on a unique characteristic about their town, city or region of Michigan. Unique information may be historical, recreational, physical structures (man-made or natural), a tourist interest or other feature that makes your area different to the other parts of the state. The Michigan Collaborative is in its seventh year. The project was established as a pilot project during the 1997-1998 school year. During the first year 4th grade students from Akron-Fairgrove, Alpena, Armada, Fraser, Indian River, Pinconning, Saginaw, St. Clair Shores, Suttons Bay, Vassar, and Warren exchanged information via video about land forms, farming, grange halls, shipwrecks, and their towns and cities. The response was overwhelming from the teachers and the students involved. So, we decided to make it bigger and better, come join us this year.

URANTIA -- INTERACTIVE MAP OF FIRST CENTURY PALESTINE This map should be considered a work in progress. the Forgotten City New Light on Sepphoris and the Urban World of Jesus , Grand Rapids, michigan Baker Book http://www.urantiabook.org/graphics/intro.htm
Extractions: Introduction to the Map This map shows first century Roman roads, caravan routes and geographic locations referenced in the Urantia Papers. The material contained in this map has been derived from a number of sources. Maps from a variety of sources were digitized and integrated into a single document. There are several problems in constructing such a map. These include ambiguity as to the exact location of some of the sections of first century Roman roads, multiple name changes for towns and villages over the past 2,000 years, multiple towns and villages which have the same name, disputed sites, climatic and geologic changes which even in a short 2,000 years have changed the run of rivers and streams, changes in the location of springs and shifting regions of forestation and aridity. When a question existed, the German Tubingen data (most recent) was used. The Roman Roads and Caravan Routes No two sources are entirely in agreement on the locations of first century Roman roads. All sources have reconstructed complete routes based on the finding of isolated sections of road. The primary consideration in reconstructing these routes is the avoidance of steep changes in elevation and the avoidance of swampy areas in which malaria was endemic. The identification of roads is based on the finding of Roman mileage markers which contain information identifying a section of road with a particular political regime.

Extractions: Only a short time aft er enduring th e Great Fire of 1871, Chicagoans realized what a unique opportunity the destruction had offered them. Residents, politicians and developers immediately set about rebuilding a bigger and better Chicago. In the years following the fire, Chicago showed an ability to attract wealthy investors, ambitious architects, and new businesses. These factors as well as its central location and large number of railroad terminals made it a frontrunner in the competition to host a Permanent Exposition in Honor of the Four Hundredth Anniversary of the Discovery of America. On February 25, 1890, Congress selected Chicago as the host city for the Worlds Columbian Exposition. Chicago had seen an influx of top architects looking to ply their trade in a revitalized city. The fire had swept away old wooden structures and emphasized the importance of fire safe construction. Skyscrapers with their iron and steel skeletons were one of the many innovations employed by architects such as Daniel Burnham. Burnham and his partner John Root earned fortunes and great reputations by applying the latest construction and design techniques required by new building codes and fire limits. The planners of the 1893 Worlds Fair gave Burnham the job of chief of construction.

Using the World Wide Web to gather and process data from across English-speaking North America, I intend to plot the regional variations in the use of the terms "Pop" and "Soda" to describe carbonated soft drinks. Since the earliest research into the the English Language as spoken in North America was begun by Noah Webster in the early 18th century, the regional variations in dialect have always been the most challenging and difficult to explain field. Since the development of carbonated beverage in 1886, one of linguistic geography The primary source of data for this study will be submissions from readers of this web page. Obviously, this may not be a completely random sampling, but since the primary objective of the study is to map the regional distribution and not the population distribution per response, this sample should suffice. Also, since a large percentage of internet users are college students who may use dialects not local to their current place of residence, this survey asks for the respondent's "home town" and the beverage-term used by most of the population there. This data will be imperfect at best, but should be the most accurate possible without actually going into the field, and certainly the most comprehensive study of the field to date.
