Weather forecasting is a science and an art. To make a good forecast you must know some meteorology and have a hunch what is going to happen based on experience. Forecasting temperature and precipitation will be discussed here since they are the most relevant parameters to the public. Before attempting to perform a weather forecast, one should understand a few key concepts in atmospheric science. These concepts include: Synoptic scale (large scale) meteorology: Air masses, fronts, and pressure systems. Mesoscale (local scale) meteorology: Effects of topography, bodies of water, the urban heat island, etc. Vertical structure of the atmosphere: How and why pressure, temperature, and density decrease with altitude. The following discussion will assume the reader is familiar with these concepts.

Extractions: With summer temperatures in the 70s and 80s and winter snowfall averaging 180 inches, our area offers year round outdoor recreational opportunities. Old mining and logging trails provide wilderness access for anglers, hikers, mountain bikers, and campers in the summertime. Lake Superior, as well as, the many smaller lakes, rivers, and wetlands, are ideals for canoeing, kayaking, and other water-based activities. The miles of empty beaches are perfect for walking, agate hunting or just relaxing. The Keweenaw also offers boat and plane access to Isle Royale National Park located in the middle of Lake Superior. Its beauty and remote wilderness are excellent for backpacking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. In the wintertime, downhill skiers will find some of the Midwest's most exciting runs at resorts such as Mt. Bohemia and Porcupine Mountains State Park. Michigan Tech even has its own ski hill at Mont Ripley just across the Portage from campus . Cross country skiers have an even larger selection of groomed trails to choose from, including Maasto Hiihto, Swedetown, and Tech Trails. Acres of forest and State Parks provide a great place to try out snowshoeing too. And there is no forgetting the hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails that attract riders from throughout the upper Midwest.
