LOCAL ACCESS TRANSPORT AREAS (LATAs) As a vestige of the AT&T breakup, the "Baby Bells" or "RBOC's" historically have been restricted to operations within, but not between, LATAs; that is, they have been prohibited from providing long distance service. There are 164 LATAs in the United States, 5 in Michigan, as seen in this map. Under the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996, former Bell companies can compete in the long distance market once the FCC certifies that their local markets are open. In those handful of states that have opened up their long distance markets to such competition, consumers have benefited from sharply lower prices.

Sanitary and Ship Canal opened. The flow of the Chicago River was reversed from Lake Michigan to the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Since most of the densely populated central area was drained into the Chicago River via the sewer system, this action effectively shifted the continental divide from the western edge of the city to the very shore of Lake Michigan. This process was completed later in the century with the completion of the North Shore Channel, the Cal-Sag Channel and the sewer system. The population As people crowded together, there was a tendency for immigrants to cluster with others who shared a common ethnic heritage. Although actual census data tends to suggest that few neighborhoods had more than 50% of any particular national group, neighborhoods often became identified with specific ethnic groups, and were named appropriately. Extractions: Calvin McCarter, a homeschooled student from near Grand Rapids, Michigan, won the 2002 National Geographic Bee Wednesday at National Geographic Society Headquarters in Washington, D.C. At ten years old, Calvin was the youngest competitor, beating students who were making their second and third appearances in the finals. Second place went to Matthew Russell of Bradford, Pennsylvania, while third was taken by Erik Miller of Kent, Washington. Calvin received a U.S. $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society. Matthew and Erik will receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively. The other finalists will get $500 each. "The money's nice," Calvin said after the competition. "I just try to relax" while answering questions. Bee champion Calvin McCarter won a U.S. $25,000 scholarship for college and lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society. He received his prizes from Society President John Fahey (center) and Chairman Gilbert Grosvenor. In the final round, Calvin and Matthew were both asked the same five questions. They were tied with one wrong answer each before the final question, which asked which country uses Lop Nur, a marshy depression at the eastern end of the Tarim Basin, as a nuclear test site. Calvin correctly identified China, while Matthew guessed France.
