Extractions: Research At Pierce Cedar Creek Institute there are a number of "continuing education" courses for professionals practicing in ecological sciences. These are currently focused on wetlands and on plant identification. Some scheduled courses are taught in conjunction with Rutgers University Cook College Office of Continuing Professional Education , the Wetland Training Institute , and Environmental Concern. This course provides practical guidelines for choosing and planting vegetation in restored and constructed wetlands using species based on wetland zonation and adaptation of plants to hydrologic zones. Herbaceous and woody plants are included in both classroom and field exercises. Acquisition of plants from various sources is compared and contrasted. It also covers the use of wetland soils as a source of plant propagules from a historical and practical perspective. In the field, acquire plants and plant herbs, shrubs, and trees in all forms currently used in wetland planting. The course enables preparation of wetland planting plans, acquisition of viable plants, and supervision of and planting of all types of plant propagules. Bioengineering is the use of living plant materials in conjunction with light engineering materials for erosion control. It is often a more environmentally sensitive alternative to classical engineering practices. This course will emphasize erosion control on streambanks and shorelines. Lectures will emphasize slope stability, channel migration, and the harmonious interaction between bioengineered structures and stream mechanics. Participants will learn the use and application of field fabricated methods such as willow wattling and brush layering and manufactured materials such as fiber rolls and plant pallets. The emphasis of the course will be control of erosion in environments where seeding is not effective. In an one day field trip, the class will install erosion controls using both field fabricated and manufactured products in a stream environment.
