Extractions: Contact: Tiffany Dowling (517) 241-0592 Agency: Career Development Michigan Department of Career Development Awards Competency-Based Curriculum Grants The Michigan Department of Career Development (MDCD) has awarded Competency-Based Curriculum grants to the Capital Area Workforce Development Consortium, Glen Oaks Community College, and the M-TEC (Michigan Technology Education Center) at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Dr. Barbara Bolin, director of the Department of Career Development, announced today. The grants total $363,064. Michigan employers often find it difficult to locate skilled workers with strong academic and technical skills. The Competency-Based Curriculum grants help education and training providers develop curricula to address the skill needs of Michigans workforce. They also provide an incentive for the creation of business and education partnerships to propose solutions. These grants will be used to develop competency-based curricula for manufacturing skills training, a medical assistant certificate program, and operations mechanics working in a regulated manufacturing environment, Dr. Bolin said. The Department of Career Development is pleased to help support the establishment of effective training programs for these important careers. Individuals, employers, and Michigans overall economy will benefit from these awards. The grant recipients, the amounts they have been awarded, and brief descriptions of how the money will be used are as follows:
