Story Tools VERACRUZ, Mexico (CNN) Ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations, illegal fireworks shops caught fire Tuesday in the Mexican port city of Veracruz, setting off a barrage and inferno that killed at least 28 people and injured 35 others, a civil defense official said. "Unfortunately, this clandestine kind of selling of fireworks is very difficult to control," said Carlos Gelista, director of the Emergency Administration for Mexico's Civil Protection agency. The cause of the deadly incident, which torched a crowded market area, was not immediately known. "Maybe a spark or somebody with a cigarette or something caused the fireworks to explode suddenly," Gelista said. Police and citizens helped firefighters carry heavy hoses to the fire as they struggled to put out blazing cars, buildings and market stalls, The Associated Press reported. Fireworks could be heard zipping through the air over the roar of the flames, according to the AP.

Being a member of Freemasonry is a way of life, founded on a belief in God, honor, compassion, loyalty and trust. Freemasonry is an ancient order, having existed in some form for so long that many serious scholars differ as to the time and place of its origin. Masons were free men of that time and built the great cathedrals and temples and have ascended to become one of the largest fraternities in the world. Hidalgo was one of a group of creoles who met at QuerEtaro and planned a revolution. The plot was soon discovered, but he took a bold step and openly adopted the cause of independence. On Sept. 16, 1810, he issued the Grito de Dolores [cry of Dolores], launching the revolt against Spain. Hidalgo gathered an immense army of local Indians. With the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe (see Guadalupe Hidalgo ) as his standard, he injected religious zeal into the insurrection, but the Indians' cry for freedom and land was just as fervent. Ignacio Allende and other creole officers who had taken part in the conspiracy now brought colonial militia into Hidalgo's ranks, and certain radical creoles also joined. The church and the landowning creoles remained hostile.
