It still is the only meteorology department in the southeastern United States to offer degrees from the bachelor of science (BS) through the doctor of philosophy (PhD). The program at The Florida State University is considered to be one of the top five in the nation. The department uses software developed by UNIDATA (the USSDM system) and NASA (the GEMPAK system) to acquire, process, and store current weather information received by satellite. PC-McIDAS and WSI 7000 software are used to access meteorological data and satellite imagery. An Alden D100 DIFAX computer ingests, displays, and loops National Weather Service forecast maps. GOES satellite images are ingested by the department's direct readout ground station and are viewable in real time at various locations in the Meteorology Building. In addition, the department houses the office of the State Climatologist of Florida, who has a microcomputer/CD-ROM system including a climatic database on compact disc. The department also maintains an atmospheric instrumentation laboratory to support education and research in the area of experimental meteorology.

Extractions: In the School of Meteorology, the assessment by a General Examination consists of two distinct parts. The first part is called the "Qualifying Exam" (rules attached). The Qualifying Exam tests the student's breadth of knowledge of advanced meteorology. The content and required level of competence is commensurate with the scope of the graduate lecture courses taught by the School of Meteorology. In exception to standard Graduate College rules, the Qualifying Exam is a uniform exam and prepared by the entire faculty, and not by the student's Doctoral Committee. Also, the Qualifying Exam may be attempted without formal application to the Graduate College for permission to attempt the General Examination. The second part of the General Exam is usually referred to simply as "The General Exam". The General Exam may be attempted after passing the Qualifying Exam, and the student submits a formal application to the Graduate College for permission to attempt the General Examination at this time. In the School of Meteorology, the General Exam consists of the student writing and defending a "Prospectus of Dissertation Research", as well as answering any other questions about science or meteorology that the committee asks in the oral exam.

Accounts will remain valid for as long as the user maintains a current relationship with the department through employment, student status or active collaboration. An account will be suspended with home directory space being archived if the account has not been accessed for a period of at least 6 months. The account can be reinstated by emailing a request to helper and the home directory will be restored. Those accounts that have not been active for at least 1 year will be removed and home directory space will be archived to tape for a period not to exceed an additional 6 months. After this 6 month period, the user's data will be permanently removed from the system. A new account will have to be issued if the user wishes access to the system. There is a quota of 75 pages/month for printing to the HP color printer in Lab I. This printer should only be used to print images/documents intended for publication or presentation (e.g., dissertations, posters for meetings, figures for publications, etc.). Your quota is reset at roughly the beginning of each month and unused pages are not rolled into the next month. Please do not "burn up" your unused allocation needlessly. This will extend the life of the printer and keep maintenance to a manageable level.
