    Extractions: Leading the expedition was fifty-two year old Legend of Honor member Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, an eminent French astronomer and mathematician, and foremost surveyor and mapmaker of his day. Nicollet, had been the protoge of Laplace, and is recognized in the last vol. of Mecanique Celeste as an observer of comets, and for his work on the great map of France. At the time of the revolution of 1830, Nicollet was astronomer at the Bureau of Longitudes at the Royal Observatory in Paris. Financially ruined by the revolution, he came to America, where he became associated with Rudolf Hassler of the U. S. Coast Survey. In 1839, J. R. Poinsett, then Secretary of the Department of War, requested of Nicollet that he write an essay on Meteorological Observations. The essay was published by the Corps of Topographical Engineers. It is primarily a collection of questions and suggestions of topics to be studied. On pp 6-7 of the 1848 Geographical Memoir is an entirely current description on the meteorological dynamics of the western states.

This page was developed in conjunction with a presentation made at the 22nd Conference on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology with Symposium on Fire and Forest Meteorology, 28 January-2 February 1996, Atlanta, Georgia A synopsis of this presentation is included. In many areas of the United States, wildfires take a toll in human life and property. Wildfires and weather are interrelated. Weather conditions can directly contribute to the occurrence of wildfires such as through lightning strikes or indirectly such as by an extended dry spell or drought that contributes to the availability of fuel. A large wildfire, or conflagration, is often capable of modifying the local weather conditions or producing "its own weather". Photo of a forest wildfire Source NASA While many of these fires could not be prevented, some of the loss in life and property could be reduced if appropriate awareness and planning were made well before the fire strikes. The awareness and planning efforts represent an educational effort. Part of this education requires study of weather topics. Awareness of the sequences of weather conditions that produce conditions conducive of wildfires. Even attempts at escape and fire suppression are influenced by various local weather events that are directly modified by the conflagration.
