Through their network of contacts with government authorities, the armed forces and academic circles in the countries covered, delegates were also involved in spreading knowledge of international humanitarian law and the history, principles, ideals and activities of the Movement. They promoted ratification of the Protocols additional to the Geneva Conventions and recognition of the competence of the International Fact-Finding Commission. The delegation also encouraged governments and National Societies to take steps to follow up the Review Conference of the 1980 UN Weapons Convention, the 26th International Red Cross and Red Crescent Conference and public awareness campaigns carried out by the ICRC such as those on water in war and anti-personnel mines. The ICRC moreover wished to encourage wider acceptance of the tasks entrusted to it by the international community. During the year delegates stepped up their cooperation with Red Crescent Societies in the region. In particular, they participated in Tunisian Red Crescent seminars and in May organized with the National Society an exhibition of posters on the theme ``Solidarity with women victims of war'' to celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. In Morocco the regional delegate gave a talk on humanitarian law at a seminar on the protection of women, organized by the Moroccan Red Crescent with ICRC support, and in Libya the ICRC cooperated with the Libyan Red Crescent in setting up a documentation centre.
