This videotape, part of the Language of Mathematics unit, aims to illustrate the value and use of algebraic expressions for describing patterns (moving from the general to the particular) and for communicating ideas efficiently. The material visually links algebraic expressions to formulas for calculating voltage, acceleration, and the distance to a thunderstorm. Also available for this unit is a teacher's resource book with lesson suggestions and student worksheet packages. Math Vantage videotape series (ENC-013916) Algebraic sentences This series of videotapes aims to motivate pre-algebra students with high energy footage of real world situations that illustrate key mathematical concepts and applications. This videotape, part of the Language of Mathematics unit, describes how chemical formulas are used by a swimming pool manager to maintain good water quality and illustrates how the movement in a golf swing can be described with equations. The material visually links algebraic sentences to formulas for calculating speed, electric current, and temperature using the chirps of a cricket per fifteen seconds. Also available for this unit is a teacher's resource book with lesson suggestions and student worksheet packages.

Starke Elementary School, I combined the use of The News-Journal's weekly grocery ads with the book, Pigs Will Be Pigs: Fun With Math (by Amy Axelrod) to create a problem solving activity. I read the book to 4th and 5th grade students twice. The first reading was to enjoy the book. During the second reading, students were to calculate the amount of money found by the Pig family during a search of their house. Then, using the newspaper grocery ads, the students' assignment was to plan a complete and balanced meal, making sure that the total cost did not exceed the amount set by the Pigs' total collection of found money. Students cut out and pasted their purchased items onto a paper plate to show their meals. The plates were then glued to placemats (pieces of 12" x 19" construction paper).

Extractions: Lesson Plans After a dynamic workshop presented by National Trainer Chris Czjaka from WNET, New York City, New York, Faculty members from the University of Idaho and Boise State University left prepared to enter their classrooms and teach their students, pre-service teachers, strategies for effectively using video to explain, motivate, reinforce, and reach students' different learning styles. Here at IdahoPTV we feel it is critical to support and prepare teachers in the effective use of technology, both at the pre-service level and for veteran teachers and are proud to be one of only twenty-six public television stations selected to implement the National Teacher Training Institute The National Teacher Training Institute and IdahoPTV are proud to present the lesson plans developed by students from the University of Idaho and Boise State University. For the past five years, IdahoPTV has worked with University faculty to implement the National Teacher Training methodology within their education courses. Once education students have had hands-on training with the NTTI methodology, they are invited to submit a lesson plan to Idaho Public Television using the NTTI methodology.

Overview: Students will watch a segment of the PBS Ken Burns JAZZ documentary about Buddy Bolden creating the "Big Four," which gave jazz its lilting rhythms as opposed to the straight "boom-chick-boom-chick" of a march. They will then compare and contrast the rhythms of marches and jazz based on the examples in the film, and explore notation, subdivision of notes and the altered and innovative rhythms found in jazz music. Extractions: Algebraic Thinking Focus Modeling or simulating real world situations can help students develop the idea of function. Such experiences build an understanding of variable, the relationship between variables, and generalizing these relationships. Lesson Objective Students will design and carry out an experiment to model a real world situation. They express their results with multiple representations and use the results to make predictions. Overview of the Lesson Students design an experiment to model a leaky faucet and determine the amount of water wasted due to the leak. Using the data they gather in a table, students graph and write an equation for a line of best fit. Students then use their derived equation to make predictions about the amount of water that would be wasted from one leak over a long period of time or the amount wasted by several leaks during a specific time period. Materials For each group: Procedure Prior to the Lesson: Students should have prior experience interpreting tables and graphs. They should also have worked with finding a function rule for a set of data. It would be helpful, but not necessary, if they had designed models to simulate real world events.
