Home The M.A. degree, plan A, requires essentially the above plus (i) satisfactory demonstration of a language competency and (ii) a thesis, which substitutes for six elective hours. Six hours must be in a cognate area. The M.A., plan B, is the same as plan A except 6 hours of advanced bibliography or technical services course work substitute for the thesis. Degree requirements allow a student considerable freedom to design her/his program to suit individual needs and interests. The curriculum is sufficiently varied to permit opportunities to build both breadth and depth into the course of study. The student is assisted in this endeavor by a faculty advisor who provides guidance and counsel. Advisor assignment is based, when possible, on student interests and preferences. Ultimately, however, it is the student's responsibility to see that all School and Graduate School requirements are met prior to taking the final written examination. Extractions: about Library Media Centers By Doris Smith MASSACHUSETTS ranks 47th out of 50 states in the number of students per school library media specialist. Thirteen percent of Massachusetts's public schools do not provide library media center programs for their students and staff. For a state with so many institutions of higher learning and high tech companies, the condition of the school libraries in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is untenable. As a first step in improving the situation, the Massachusetts School Library Media Association (MSLMA) set goals to make our profession more widely known in our state and to demonstrate the importance of our role in the school and in curriculum planning. Then came the Information Power II initiative from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), with its mandate to reach out to other organizations. Margaret Hallissey, MSLMA past president and AASL representative, challenged us to stretch ourselves and make contact with other organizations in the educational community
