Military-homeschool Issue to improve homeschooling in massachusetts by introducing Since military recruiters understandably want assurance that letter from the Home School Legal Defense http://www.mhla.org/militaryhomeschool.htm
Extractions: (This article appeared in Snail Mail in an abridged version.) Military Survey Re-ignites Fears of Legislation Over the past 20 years, homeschooling activists have learned the hard way that introducing legislation to improve the situation for homeschooling families can easily backfire and unexpectedly lead to more, not less, regulation and control of our families. For more than ten years, MHLA and MassHOPE, the two statewide organizations in Massachusetts, have stood firmly together against the idea of trying to improve homeschooling in Massachusetts by introducing new law. Since most families in this state homeschool with the relatively friendly cooperation of their local school districts or at least without major problems, there are better ways to help the few families who do run into real trouble. For similar reasons, many homeschoolers across the country, including the 10-year-old National Homeschool Association (NHA) and the newly formed National Home Education Network (NHEN), are concerned about a law designed to make it easier for homeschoolers to enlist in the military. Since military recruiters understandably want assurance that people who claim to be homeschooling graduates actually are, a survey was sent to selected homeschool organizations to get help in defining homeschool graduates. The Survey by the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA) included a cover letter from the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). Homeschoolers in favor of this action see the 5-year pilot program as a necessary change to allow homeschoolers who want to enlist in the military to be treated equally with those possessing high school diplomas.

Extractions: UPON BECOMING president, Ronald Wilson Reagan supplanted John Wilkes Booth as the most influential actor in American history. Reagan, who died last week at the age of 93, was in the spotlight long before most readers of this newspaper were born. Elected the nations oldest chief executive, he was a contemporary of the youngest, John Fitzgerald Kennedy dead now for almost 41 years. Reagan (already in Hollywood) and Kennedy (the son of a famous businessman) both entered public consciousness in 1940: Ronnie playing football coach George "the Gipper" Gipp in the film Knute Rockne All American prophetically titled Modern Hero in Great Britain; Jack publishing Why England Slept a study of Britains hesitancy to confront Hitler. Mass culture and class were mutual obsessions of these unlikely generational bookends. Iconic of their respective West and East Coast tribes, both were cool and stylish personalities, engagingly on to themselves and the aphrodisiac of their own artifice. Each in his own way played the aristocrat for an audience consumed by middle-class desires and aspirations. Actor, Hollywood union chief, corporate spokesman for General Electric, television pitchman for Borax (a still-extant but no-longer-swanky cleaning product), Reagan always engaged in his own happy-go-lucky and self-serving way with the issues of the day turned political pro in the early 1960s. By the aggressively consensus-oriented standards of his time, he was one or two steps removed from being a right-wing nut. His philosophy: Big Business is good. Communism is evil. Government is, if not evil, at least sinister. Taxes are unspeakable. Republicans are Gods people. Democrats, if also not evil, are at best misguided, at worst dupes of the godless reds. (Hear any echoes here?)

We are looking for well-prepared students. Does MIT take into account that some secondary schools offer more rigorous programs and have tougher grading?
