Schools for the Gifted The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. National Schools Of Character Award 146 mmccarthy@hudson.k12.ma.us. SEPTEMBER 10, 2001, WASHINGTON, DC Hudson Public schools in Hudson, massachusetts (k-12) was honored today as the school http://www.hudson.k12.ma.us/schools_district/administration/nsoc.htm
Extractions: AWARDS PROGRAM SEPTEMBER 10, 2001, WASHINGTON, DC - Hudson Public Schools in Hudson, Massachusetts (K-12) was honored today as the school district winner in the 2001 National Schools of Character awards program in recognition of its exemplary work to encourage the social, ethical and academic development of its students through character education. Hudson Public Schools was selected in addition to eight individual school winners in the competition. National Schools of Character is an annual awards program recognizing K-12 schools and districts demonstrating outstanding character education initiatives that yield positive results in student behavior, school climate and academic performance. The program is sponsored and administered by the Character Education Partnership (CEP), a national nonprofit, nonpartisan and nonsectarian coalition based in Washington, DC, with generous support from the UAW/GM Center for Human Resources, Enron and the John Templeton Foundation. Hudson Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Sheldon H. Berman said, "For those school districts interested in system-wide change, putting character education forward can be a key part of positive education reform. I've never regarded this as an add-on or something extra - it is a way to achieve the academic goals of the district. Character education is an effective way to facilitate learning, and creating a sense of community in a school creates a conducive atmosphere for students to learn. Plus it supports the active goal of helping kids become better citizens. This is key to what education reform is all about."

HEC K-12 Education News | Western Massachusetts October 2, 2001. A Comprehensive Approach to Safe schools/Healthy Students. NORTHAMPTON, MA A new federal grant has been awarded http://www.collaborative.org/newshec21.html
Extractions: Creating safe and healthy school environments and sound emotional well-being is essential to building a strong educational foundation that is conducive to learning. The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative funds will enable the Hampshire County school districts of Amherst-Pelham, Easthampton, Northampton, Gateway Regional, and Ware to improve coordination between community agencies and schools and meet gaps in services. This project grows out of a two year collaboration between schools and community organizations working through the Strategic Planning Initiative for Families and Youth of Hampshire County (SPIFFY). This organization, which now operates from a base at the Collaborative through a grant from the Community Foundation, developed out of concerns about inadequate services to reduce juvenile violence and other risk factors. The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative encourages long range planning to target violence and at-risk behaviors, beginning in early childhood. Though research has shown that positive social and emotional development of young children aids in preventing future difficulties, there is a real lack of services for families with children under the age of five. To meet this need, the Collaborative will add to its early childhood staff in order to provide technical assistance and training for more early care providers and parents, and work with other agencies to provide home visiting services.
