Massachusetts Self-Determination Project Summary The Commonwealth of massachusetts has received $100,000 from the and how to accessother resources in the One of the family Council s main goals would be to http://www.unh.edu/rwj/states/Massachusetts.html
Extractions: PROJECT SUMMARY The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has received $100,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to transition its statewide system of policies and practices from a predominantly professionally driven "one-size-fits-all" model to one that routinely implements self-determination in terms of individuals' ability to define and chose their supports and to control the financial resources for those supports. Funding from the Foundation will serve as a catalyst to translate existing demonstration projects in systemic policy, procedure and practice toward the achievement of individual outcomes and statewide systems change. There are many examples throughout the Commonwealth where activities have been implemented which are designed to foster individuals making significant decisions about their supports. A consumer directed service procurement process gives the individual, and his/her family, decision-making control over the service package for the individual. Quite different than controlling small pots of family support dollars, the Consumer Directed RFP, as it is called, allows the individual to determine how his/her residential and day supports will be configured and by whom. Through another pilot we are examining how to allow individuals to seek providers, not based on a contracted slot basis, but on a qualified pool of providers basis. In this regard the dollars follow the individual and not a contract.

Extractions: Winthrop's Fleet landed in Salem, Massachusetts in 1630, with the first mass exodus of Puritans from England. There were a 1,000 settlers in that first group of settlers. Two hundred died that winter and two hundred more returned to England the following spring. But, in the next ten years, 20,000 persons, most from England and most of the Puritan philosophy, immigrated to Massachusetts to form the backbone of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. And, then, it was over. There was hardly any further migration into New England until after the Revolution. Virtually all growth of the colony after 1640 was by natural reproduction, which is why once you've found yourself a descendant of a pre-Revolution New Englander, you very likely have a bunch of immigrant ancestors. John Winthrop was their leader, until his death in 1649. A man of some wealth, he helped to finance the first expedition and his money fed many of those first settlers in that first year.
