The VRL supports the Massachusetts Department of Educations commitment to provide a free and appropriate education by being an optional resource for school districts seeking to borrow materials on a per school year basis. It is ultimately the responsibility of the school district to provide any and all specialized materials deemed essential and included in the students IEP. Examples of items available for loan would be braille writers, tape recorders, slate and stylus, pre-braille and literacy kits, tactile tools, raised lined maps, braille and large type textbooks, standardized tests, assessment tools and materials available with Federal Quota Funds through the American Print House for the Blind. Any student resident in the Commonwealth with special educational needs in regard to vision, ages 3 to 22 (or to the age a high school diploma is attained, i.e. college students are not eligible) can be eligible for services.
