Extractions: Tuesday, October 5, 1999 A spirit of educational rebellion, surprising for its passion and resilience, continues to spread across Massachusetts, encouraging opposition to the state-mandated MCAS test, and making an eloquent plea for broader forms of assessing public schools and the students they serve. Much like the revolutionaries of old, men and women are gathering in the halls of Harvard and public spaces of Cambridge and Boston and west into the Berkshires, to organize against the use of this paper-and-pencil test to sort children and make sweeping judgments about who should graduate from high school and who should not. In a classic Colonist vs. crown match-up, these parents, kids, and teachers, along with a handful of college professors, and a growing number of public school administrators, have taken on the educational bureaucracy, which is baked in it's defense of MCAS by an absolutely eye-opening list of corporate and civic giants. IBM, Hewlett-Packard, BankBoston, Bell Atlantic, Price Waterhouse Coopers, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the Boston Globe, and many others have helped orchestrate the most expensive public relations campaign ever mounted in Massachusetts on behalf of any educational initiative. They have been using videos, brochures, personal contacts, and newsletters by the thousands to promote acceptance of the MCAS test.

Extractions: Schools, and Democracy Ron Miller T he cultural turbulence of the 1960s and early 1970s sparked the beginning of a vibrant new movement for "alternative" education. A flurry of passionate and visionary books by A.S. Neill, John Holt, Herbert Kohl, Jonathan Kozol, and other outspoken critics inspired thousands of people to think differently about the nature and purpose of education. By 1972 hundreds of "free schools" and experimental public school programs were founded, and within a few years more, the growing homeschooling movement offered another alternative to families. Public education, which had been revered by generations of Americans as a pillar of our democratic society, was now seen by many as a threat to democracy. T he roots of this disillusionment went deeper than 1960s protest movements, however. Although most Americans had supported the institution of public schooling, they have argued over its goals from the very beginning, and every generation has seen massive efforts to reform schools in some way. We have never been entirely satisfied with public education because different elements of society expect education to serve purposes that are in conflict with each other, and public schools have been weakened by the compromises that have been required.

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (AP) The "LAMP," or "Library Access to Music" system officially went live Monday, pumping music into dorm rooms over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's cable television network. The students, Keith Winstein and Josh Mandel, said they had negotiated for the Harry Fox Agency, the mechanical licensing arm of the National Music Publishers Association, to grant a license to a Seattle-based company called Loudeye to sell the school thousands of MP3s for the system. But even last week as the system prepared to go live, there was confusion. The Harry Fox Agency said no such license was complete, while Loudeye insisted it was.

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (AP) Keith Winstein and Josh Mandel may soon be the most popular guys on campus. They say they've discovered a way to give their fellow students at MIT and elsewhere dorm-room access to a huge music library without having to worry about getting slapped with a lawsuit from the recording industry. The students will share the software with other schools, who they say could operate their own networks for just a few thousand dollars per year. They call that a small price to pay for heading off lawsuits like those the recording industry filed against hundreds of alleged illegal file-swappers. Here's the catch: The system is operated over the Internet but the music is pumped through MIT's cable television network. That makes it an analog transmission, as opposed to a digital one, in which a file is reproduced exactly.

Extractions: Additional Resources and Contacts The U.S. school system was modeled after German schools created in the 1800's for the express purpose of producing obedient soldiers and factory workers (This is true! I've read it in many different good sources). The German system was extremely successful in achieving its goal in Germany and was therefore copied by other countries, including the U.S. The great American tycoons and Robber Barons were big supporters of the German system in America since they wanted literate but obedient factory workers. Our schools are operated pretty much the same way today in the 1990's as they were back when Thomas Edison was kicked out for being "addled." Creativity and independent thought and action were discouraged because such traits were problematic in a war or a factory. Today these traits interfere with our cookie cutter, mass production educational system; a bureaucratic system which is unable to change itself. "Somewhere between the ages of eleven and fifteen, the average child begins to suffer from an atrophy, the paralysis of curiosity and the suspension of the power to observe. The trouble I should judge to lie with the schools." - Thomas Edison.
