Sea Grant Media Center - Maryland - Student Of The Chesapeake Without graduate school, she says For More Information Contact Jack Greer, maryland Sea Grant Assistant 2002) by the Sea Grant National media Relations Office http://www.seagrantnews.org/news/mdstudent.html
Extractions: Maryland Sea Grant Student of the Chesapeake Jill Stevenson lifts the lid of a freezer at the University of Maryland's Chesapeake Biological Lab, releasing the pungent smell of dead fish. "Isn't she beautiful?" she asks, smiling. From the freezer she takes the severed head of a sturgeon, its mouth agape, breathing frost. "A cow," Jill explains, "from the Hudson River." One can't help but wonder, looking at Jill's bright and enthusiastic smile, what has brought her to this great enthusiasm for sturgeon, even dead ones. The answer begins, no doubt, a long time ago, but one important waypoint between Jill's studies in geochemistry at Columbia University and the staring sturgeon in her hands was the summer of 1991. That summer Jill came to the Chesapeake Bay as part of a Maryland Sea Grant Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Student fellows are paired with researchers on Bay-related science projects, mostly at the University's Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies and its two Bay laboratories, the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) and the Horn Point Environmental Laboratory (HPEL). During that summer Jill worked with research scientist Jeff Cornwell at the Horn Point Lab, near Cambridge. She worked with others as well, who both challenged her and supported her, she says. The work D on sediments and biogeochemistry D was not easy.
Extractions: The ultimate learning outcome for the school library media program is lifelong learning. A goal of every school library media program is to equip students with the skills that will enable them to continue learning. Documents such as Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs and Standards for School Library Media Programs in Maryland (Acrobat 354k) serve to point out how the school library media program is organized to do this. The AASL paper, "Implementing the National Goals for Education Through School Library Media Programs," identifies major contributions of the school library media program towards achievement of the National Goals for Education. Library media programs make a strong impact on Goal 3. By the year 2000, American students will leave grades four, eight, and twelve having demonstrated competency in challenging subject matter including English, mathematics, science, history, and geography; and every school in America will ensure that all students learn to use their minds well, so they may be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in our modern economy. A major contribution towards achievement of this goal is made by library media specialists. "Library media specialists, as information specialists, teachers, and instructional consultants, help students develop lifelong learning habits, thinking skills, and the ability to use information effectively." Several examples of regular library media center activities emphasize that the library media center provides a variety of formats for individual learning styles, current sources of information, and cooperatively designed assignments that help students develop thinking and problem solving skills.
