Extractions: Congregate meals are offered in more than 270 senior centers, religious facilities, housing facilities or other community sites throughout Maryland. In addition to the meals provided, meal sites offer an opportunity to meet new friends and engage in other social or health related programs including nutrition education, physical activity and health screening. During 2003, nearly 36,000 seniors received meals in congregate settings throughout Maryland. View a list of congregate settings Most congregate sites offer a hot lunch, however some congregate settings offer deli lunches, salad bars, soup and sandwiches or evening meals. Ethnic meals are being served in several areas of the State. Kosher meals are served in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Montgomery County. Korean meals are served in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel and Montgomery Counties. Montgomery County is serving Vietnamese and Chinese meals as well. Home delivered meals (also referred to as Meals on Wheels) are brought to homebound seniors with the intent of helping them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. In addition to nutrition services, daily contact with program volunteers or staff often provides seniors with a link to additional services in their communities. Nearly 1,400,000 meals were delivered to seniors homes in 2003.
