Trust for Early Education Web site Sign Up for Updates [ Printer Friendly ] Education does not begin in kindergarten and end with a final, formal class. Education begins at birth and continues long after graduation. Despite a lot of research that demonstrates the importance of high quality pre-kindergarten (pre-K) in a child's cognitive, social and emotional development, the United States does not provide the opportunity for all children to attend high quality pre-K programs. Concerned policymakers and community leaders must focus on the years leading up to kindergarten by guaranteeing access to high quality, voluntary, educational pre-K programs to all 3- and 4-year-olds. Many children enter kindergarten not prepared to learn. For example, the Maryland State Department of Education found that only 52 percent of children entered kindergarten fully ready to learn.
