CNN's Jason Bellini, who is embedded with the U.S. 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, talked with CNN anchor Carol Costello about the fighting in Nasiriya, as well as the dramatic rescue of an American POW in a hospital there early Wednesday. BELLINI: We're in the town of Nasiriya now, and the action we saw was on our way in. The big news has been the very dramatic, very daring POW rescue. The Marines we're embedded with weren't directly involved with that, but they did play a supporting role. The bombardment that they undertook in Nasiriya at two very selected locations was designed to deter attention away from the site where they made that rescue. So it was a very loud, very bright night late last night here in Nasiriya. SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S.

Marine Mail Guards 1921&1926 The little known history of the U.S. marines protecting the U.S. Mail during the 1920s. http://www.angelfire.com/ca/dickg/mailguards.html
Extractions: var cm_role = "live" var cm_host = "angelfire.lycos.com" var cm_taxid = "/memberembedded" All Marines know that Marines were called upon during that era to act as mail guards; but few are aware of the specific facts of that involvement. Most books dealing with Marine Corps history touch only briefly upon this subject. This might lead the reader to believe that this was only a minor incident, but that is far from the truth. The facts are that after a series of mail robberies resulting in murder, mayhem, and losses in the millions of dollars, beginning in 1921 (thru 1922), and again in 1926 (thru 1927), the Marine Corps was requested by the Post Office Department to assist in the protection of the U.S. mails, guarding mail trains and trucks, post offices, etc. Though the overall duration of the Marines' involvement spanned only a few months, thousands of Marines were detailed, and it encompassed the entire length and breadth of the United States as well. (Detailed information regarding this is on record at the Marine Corps Historical Center, Washington, D.C.).

He spoke Saturday with CNN's Kyra Phillips. RODGERS: It's night here in the deserts of southern Afghanistan, and U.S. Marine light armored vehicles are fanning out on reconnaissance missions. Nightly patrols are searching out any pockets of Taliban resistance or perhaps efforts by the Taliban to infiltrate and penetrate the perimeter of the makeshift air base the Marines have established. The Marines' actual contact with the Taliban has been limited so far. These light armored units are supported by Cobra helicopters, and in the darkness of the desert night, everyone wears night-vision goggles. RESOURCES Go on the scene with CNN The problem for the Marines is the Taliban have integrated themselves into the civilian population in southern Afghanistan. That means that as the Marines discover cars crisscrossing the desert at night, they must determine who are the real civilians and who is carrying gasoline and other supplies to the remaining Taliban fighters in this area some of whom are believed to still have Soviet-vintage tanks and armor.

Extractions: SOM is an organization made up of volunteers worldwide who are dedicated to to supporting, not just our Marines but all other military branches, throughout every aspect of their military career. From boot camp, through training as well as deployments, and even into VA Homes or hospitals, we support our service members. We send them support through U.S. mail , e-mail and care packages. We are extremely proud of all we have accomplished over the last 5 years and look forward to an exciting future! We hope you'll take a few minutes to look over the rest of our information and get to know what makes SOM not only amazing but truly different from the rest. You are probably asking yourself what makes SOM different from the numerous pen pal groups that have sprouted up over the last 2 years or so. That is easy! Years before September 11th and Operation Enduring Freedom we were here supporting our military while they were the forgotten men and women. While the same people in this country who today call jet noise " the sound of freedom," and were fighting over reducing our military's size and budget, we were here, quietly supporting our service members behind the scenes. To members of SOM, patriotism and supporting our troops isn't a fad or something you do during a time of conflict or war. Supporting our military is something we do EVERY DAY! That is what makes us unique!

Extractions: Genesis of an Army After having looked at my army lists again, I've come to realise that the Klingon-inspired names for my characters sucked. So I've taken the easy option and gone for GW Latin-style names. This means that Chaplain Grabthar no longer features in the army, but he's not forgotten as the URL to this site, and the back story of Chaplain Tyrus proves. In the down-time since my last updates, I've had the chance to purchase a few more models and can now field a 1,500 point army without proxying, so I've put the list in the army lists section of the website. While I was in a list making mood, I worked out which units I could drop to make a valid 500 point force and the results can be found here Although it has been an awful long time since the site has seen any updates, it's not off-line. I'm afraid an unfortunate case of Real Life intervened.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) About 200 U.S. Marines returned to base here in the pre-dawn hours Wednesday after conducting a search of a walled compound where it is believed Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammed Omar once stayed. Anti-Taliban forces said Omar is believed to have abandoned the compound in the last three weeks, and Marine officers described the search as an intelligence gathering mission to find out what al Qaeda or Taliban fighters might have left behind. The compound, described as a massive complex with at least 14 separate buildings, is in Helmand province, just west of the Marines' Kandahar base. The Marines returned in light armored vehicles and Humvees after being gone for about 30 hours.

Extractions: COMPLETE COVERAGE FRONT LINES AMERICA AT HOME U.S. Marines relax against their full battle gear on the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu on Sunday. WASHINGTON (CNN) The U.S. Marine contingent in Afghanistan will be used to help hunt Taliban and al Qaeda forces on the move around Kandahar, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday. About 500 of an expected 1,000-plus Marines landed south of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar on Sunday. They were quickly in action, with the Pentagon confirming reports Monday afternoon that U.S. helicopter gunships attacked an armored column near the airstrip they control. "They are not an occupying force," Rumsfeld said. "Their purpose is to establish a forward base of operations to help pressure the Taliban forces in Afghanistan, to prevent Taliban and al Qaeda terrorists from moving freely about the country." Rumsfeld said the base they have established could be used for humanitarian operations or for special operations troops, but won't necessarily be used to put more U.S. ground troops into Afghanistan.
