The National Library of Scotland has the largest map collection in Scotland and is one of the biggest in the world, with around two million cartographic items. These include over 1.5 million sheet maps, 15,000 atlases, 100,000 maps on microfilm and more than 250,000 digital maps. We also have gazetteers, cartographic reference books and periodicals, and map ephemera. The Library's holdings cover all parts of the world, through some 700 years, from medieval manuscript maps to current digital mapping. Extractions: The Map Collection has the largest collection of maps in Connecticut and one of the largest university collections in the United States. Its collections are geographically comprehensive and consist of over 200,000 map sheets, 3,000 atlases, and 900 reference books. The Collection receives maps and charts on deposit from the U.S. government agencies, and through gift and purchase. The Collection also houses approximately 15,000 rare (pre-1850) sheet maps. Though these cover many areas of the world, most pertain to North America, the United States, and New England. There is also a sizeable reference collection and a small, selective serials collection.

The collection is strong in geoscience, topographic, and bathymetric maps and charts. In 1986, the scope of the collection was broadened by the addition of Firestone Library's large collection of contemporary (post 1918) maps in political, physical, and cultural geography. Current road maps and atlases for all countries and major cities are available as well. It collects materials in support of teaching and research on campus as well as general reference. The volumes in the Maps Collection (with the exception of the government document gazetteers) have been cataloged and are listed in the UNC-Chapel Hill online catalog . Original historic maps are located in Special Collections on the first floor of Newman Library. The majority of maps are housed in the Map/Atlas Section on the first floor of Newman Library. COLLECTION Topographic coverage of the U.S. and foreign areas produced by the U.S. Geological Survey, Defense Mapping Agency, Australian National Mapping Agency and others form the backbone of the collection. Other important map series include maps of the Census Bureau, CIA, National Geographic Society, National Forest Service and the National Park Service. The collection is rounded out by an extensive collection of state and city road maps, raised relief maps, reproductions of historic maps and views, and nautical and aeronautical charts.
