As an independent not-for-profit entity, the Centre's mandate was to undertake "any and all kinds of research and development, investigations, studies and surveys in connection with the transmission and distribution of electrical energy, and in particular, high voltage transmission and distribution of electrical energy." It was also charged to "make available and to disseminate to the public for its education and benefit, the results and benefits of such research and development, investigations, studies and surveys." Major Developments The Centre established an outdoor laboratory to conduct a long-term measurement of electrical effects and other phenomena on Manitoba Hydro's Nelson River HVDC transmission system. This activity spanned more than ten years and resulted in one of the most comprehensive collections of data on the topic. to manufacture and market the Real Time Digital Simulator throughout the world.

Stewart was the eldest son of Francis Beattie Stewart and Elizabeth Farquharson Stewart who left Aberdeenshire in the UK, and settled at Fletcher, Ontario, until 1891 when they moved to Morden, Manitoba. After graduation from Arts, and two preliminary years in Theology at Manitoba College, the young Stewart spent his summer at the mission in Frank, Alberta. Here, he met and befriended Dr. George Malcolmson, who had recently opened a small hospital beside his home. As a result of his summer with Dr. Malcolmson, Stewart opted for a change in vocation. Returning again to Manitoba in the Fall, Stewart resumed study not in Theology, but in Medicine, and emerged four years later, Dr. D.A. Stewart. To support his medical studies, Stewart became a reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press, and then followed with a residency at Winnipeg General Hospital. After spending some time working in various hospitals in New York City, attending the World TB Congress in Washington in 1908, and completing an assistantship in a Connecticut sanatorium, Dr. Stewart returned once again to Manitoba. At this time, he accepted a position with the Sanatorium Board, who wished to open a tuberculosis sanatorium in Manitoba. Dr. Stewart's dedication to his cause, applied through travel and lectures for raising funds, made him a target for the very disease he was trying to fight. For a short time, Dr. Stewart became a patient himself, at the Trudeau Sanatorium at Saranac Lake, New York

    Extractions: As a prairie city gaining its origin mainly because of water travel, the city is known to some as the River City, as in The River City Brewing Company . The internationally acclaimed Forks Market is located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. It is here that Miles Macdonnell and 36 Scottish and Irish laborers founded the first Red River settlement. Beginning in 1776, when there was nobody around except for a few natives and fur traders, there were five floods before The Great Flood of 1826. This flood caused the evacuation of all the town's settlers, which by this time still tallied less than 1000. There were then six more floods before the Great Flood of 1950. This flood caused an estimated $115,000,000 in damage. Winnipeggers had now had enough and resolved to build the Red River Floodway, an architectural wonder that diverts floodwater around the metropolitan area at the expense of the surrounding villages and farms. This structure was completed in 1962, ensuring that the city would never again have to be evacuated.

It is interesting to note that the stated aims of the Manitoba Truck and Bus Owners Association were to: In those early days, trucking was a free-for-all: anyone with a truck could go into business and charge whatever the traffic would bear, and no bonds or insurance were needed. The more responsible carriers, led by William R. Noble, agreed there had to be a better way, and formed the (then) Manitoba Automotive Transport Association, both to protect their interests and to press for progressive legislation. Concerns of the time were insurance protection for both shippers and truckers, and road and safety conditions. In the Depression years, the trucking industry was low-key and low-budget. Long distance travel meant Winnipeg to Saskatoon, and a fair-sized company might have as many as six trucks. 26-foot trailers and GVWs of 32,000 pounds were standard. Issues such as safety, road maintenance, subsidies, service, regulation and railways were the focus of M.T.A. meetings.
