Once numbering around 30,000, there are now just a few hundred remaining manatees, relatives of the elephant who feed on coastal grasses. One major threat to their survival comes from boats many manatee carry scars from collisions with propellers. But in Belize and other Latin American countries, the animals are also hunted for their meat and their unproven medicinal value as an aphrodisiac. But now, some Belizean villagers, supported by environmentalists from the United States, are on patrol, trying to stop the hunters. "We can see that attitudes are being changed," says Wil Maheia of the Belize Center for Environmental Studies. "We have people coming into our office telling us they have seen manatees recently or if they have seen some kind of suspicious behavior around the manatees."

It grazes on all kinds of aquatic plants, especially marine sea grasses, assisted by its large prehensile lips, which are studded with bristles. Occasionally it swims down to thirty feet (10 m), propelling itself along with the aid of its large flat tail, which it also uses as a rudder. They originated in the middle Eocene period around 45 to 50 million years ago. They are gentle, plant-eating herbivores sometimes nicknamed "sea cows". The name manatee comes from the Haitian word manati . Today, their closest living relatives are elephants [Proboscideans], hyraxes [Hyracoidea] and aardvarks [Tubulidentata]. Manatees are classified as [sub-]ungulates, even though they live in the water. Their thick-skinned, streamlined, almost hairless bodies have forelimbs modified into flippers. The tail is enlarged and horizontally-flattened. Manatees are now quite rare. Perhaps only 2,500 are left in the USA. In ancient times, sailors mistook them for mermaids or sirens on account of their long tails. Today, they often bear scars on account of their collisions with boats, a major hazard. Manatees spend most of their time feeding, resting or travelling. They prefer shallow saltwater bays, slow-moving rivers, canals, estuaries and coastal waters. Manatees are quite agile creatures. A manatee uses its flippers and tail to steer itself. It moves its tail up and down to propel its body forward through the water. Manatees can swim vertically and upside down; they can do rolls and perform aquatic somersaults. Their extra-dense bones enable them to stay suspended at or below the water's surface.

Manatees have two flippers located close to their heads, which aid them with eating and moving through the water. The manatee shares many of its characteristics with the elephant, its closest land relative. Manatee fossils found in Florida date back 45 million years. Recent fossil skeletons found in Jamaica show that manatees evolved from a four-legged, plant-eating land animal. Manatees prefer the shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, springs and coastal areas of Florida, particularly where seagrass beds and other aquatic plants flourish. As mammals, manatees surface to breathe air, nurse their young and have hair (very sparse) on their bodies. The average manatee is ten feet long and weighs about one thousand pounds. The heaviest manatee that scientists weighed was 3,600 pounds. The manatee is Florida's state marine mammal. Protected by the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act, manatees are moving slowly on the path to recovery.

They carry the scientific name Sirenia for this reason. It's hard to believe that a sailor, even after months at sea, could mistake these creatures for the dangerous half-woman, half-bird whose seductive song would lure a sailor to his death. But manatees captured the popular imagination of explorers and sailors of old. Upon first seeing manatees (or possibly sea lions) in the Caribbean, Columbus wrote that these "mermaids were not half as beautiful as they are painted." Jacques Cousteau, the pioneering French underwater explorer, made a television program some years ago about manatees entitled, "Forgotten Mermaids" and only added to the lore. These bewhiskered animals with the gentle temperament and no known defenses, have no enemies except for humans. A cousin, the Stellar sea cow, was hunted to extinction just 27 years after it was discovered in the Bering Sea in 1741. Now manatees and their relatives, the dugongs, are endangered around the world.
