The Miyetti Alla Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) said in a statement made available to IRIN on Friday, it had counted 23,647 nomads who fled the Sarduana local government area of Taraba State into Cameroon. Fulani herdsmen, M'bororo, are kin to the people establishing the Sokoto Caliphate in northern Nigeria and Cameroon in the 19th century. According to the statement signed by MACBAN secretary general, Tukur Abashe; "Attacks on Fulani pastoralists who produce 75 percent of the protein needs of the country are becoming incessant, particularly in states like Plateau, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Taraba and Benue states."

Extractions: AFRICAN LUCY compiled by Dee Finney 2-20-04 - DREAM - IT'S STARTING - I was in Wisconsin, near Eau Claire. I went to visit my mother-in-law Lucy B. at her farmhouse. We were having a nice chat and then she told me that five of her sons had spun themselves to death to commit suicide the week before. There were no funerals for them because it was a sin to commit suicide. I thought that was atrocious. I went out for a walk and when I came back, the house was full of people who were all standing around crying. I was really puzzled, so I started asking people why everyone was crying. Nobody would tell me and that was making me angry. Finally I saw a priest standing in the midst of the crowd and he had tears in his eyes too. I said "Why is everyone standing around like somebody died? He didn't answer either, but more or less looked towards the other room. So I looked into the other room and there was my mother-in-law laying on her back with her eyes closed on top of the dining room table. People were sitting and standing around her seemingly dead body.

Local residents said fighting between Mambila indigenous farmers and nomadic Fulani had flared sporadically since New Year's Eve around Tonga Maina village on the Mambila Plateau of Taraba State. Residents of nearby towns contacted by telephone could not give a precise death toll, but national newspapers put the figure at between 30 and 50. The violence is the latest bout of ethnic bloodletting to hit Africa's most populous nation. Multi-ethnic Nigeria, with a population of more than 110 million divided into about 250 tribes, is struggling with its worst cycle of ethnic bloodletting for more than 30 years. At the end of December, more than 20 people were killed and scores injured in an attack on a central Nigerian village by an ethnic Hausa-Fulani militia.
