Extractions: CAPITAL : Valletta. Population: 7146 (1997). GEOGRAPHY : The Maltese archipelago is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean, with the largest inhabited island, Malta, lying 93km (58 miles) south of Sicily and 290km (180 miles) from North Africa. Gozo and Comino are the only other inhabited islands. The landscape of all three is characterised by low hills with terraced fields. Malta has no mountains or rivers. Its coastline is indented with harbours, bays, creeks, sandy beaches and rocky coves. Gozo is connected to Malta by ferry and is more thickly vegetated, with many flat-topped hills and craggy cliffs. Comino, the smallest island, is connected to Malta and Gozo by ferry and is very sparsely populated. The Maltese Islands enjoy a healthy climate, with mild winters and a hot summer season. Cold winds, snow, frost and fog are unknown. Rain falls between September and April. It seldom rains after April, and nearly never in summertime. The temperature averages 57.5 degrees Fahrenheit in winter (Nov-Apr) and 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer (May-Oct). The hottest period is from mid-July through mid-September although the islands seldom get too hot, as hot summer days and nights are regularly tempered by cool sea breezes. There are no mountains or rivers. The majority of fields are small and terraced, but despite lack of rain and other adverse terrain conditions, agriculture is well developed.
Extractions: Foundress of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Helene de Chappotin was born in Nantes, Brittany, France, on May 21, 1839. She grew up happily in the old Chateau du Fort near Nantes with her own family and that of her ten cousins. The experience of the death of her cousin, followed by that of her two older sisters influenced her young life profoundly. All the time God was preparing her with great love and gentleness. She had a great thirst for what she called the absolute. In 1856 she had a spiritual experience which coloured her whole life - God revealed to her his love and his beauty. She became convinced that her way was to be the religious life. A period of research and waiting followed, marked by the sudden death of her mother who could not resign herself to her daughter's vocation. This was a very painful time for Helene and her plans were put on hold. In 1860 she entered the Poor Clares in Nantes. Just a year later ill health forced her to leave. Four years later she entered with the Sisters of Marie Reparatrice, in Paris. Here she received the name of Mary of the Passion and was sent on mission to India. She remained in India for eleven years - the final stage of the long preparation which led her to found a Missionary Institute. In 1876 a series of painful and contradictory circumstances led her to leave the Congregation of Marie Reparatrice with some twenty other sisters. She returned to Rome and on January 6, 1877, Pope Pius IX authorised the foundation of the Missionaries of Mary.
Extractions: Final Profession of Sr. Roisin Hickey in Dublin, Ireland On 13 April 2002, Roisin made her Final Vows as a Franciscan Missionary of Mary, in the convent in Rush, Dublin. Surrounded by her family and the Sisters from the different FMM communities in Ireland, Roisin committed herself forever to following Christ. Sr. Philomena, the Provincial of the Province of UK, Ireland and Malta, accepted Roisins vows and gave her the news of her first mission sending to the FMM province of Kenya and Ethiopia. Roisin had already spent eighteen months in Kenya/Ethiopia during her temporary profession. During the ceremony Sr. Anna Kim and Sr. Joun-Hee Moon, sang the Magnificat in Korean, and a group of musicians, old friends of Roisin, led the music and singing. Altogether it was indeed a memorable day.

Maltese Dog Breed - Description, Brief History A description and brief history of the Maltese dog breed. The Maltese descendsfrom one of the most ancient dog breeds to be found in recorded history. http://www.kellyco.com/maltese/info.shtml
Extractions: T he Maltese dog, a type of small toy spaniel, weighs from 1.4 to 3.2 Kg (3 to 7 lbs.). It has a long silky coat of hair with no undercoat , which is pure white, or cream in color, and hangs evenly down each side from a parting that extends along the center of the back from the nose to the root of the tail. Other characteristics of the animal are a slightly round skull; a black nose; drooping ears generously covered with long hair; very dark, alert-looking eyes; short, straight legs; and a graceful, well-feathered tail. The dog is intelligent and an extremely affectionate pet. T he Maltese descends from one of the most ancient dog breeds to be found in recorded history. It has been estimated that the breed originated around 6,000 B.C., or 8,000 years ago. Although the ancient Greeks and Romans believed the dog originated on the Island of Maltathey called the breed the Melitaie Dog , Melitaie being the ancient name for Maltathere is really no evidence that proves the dog was indigenous to the Island, but rather that the Maltese is descended from a Spitz-type dog bred by the peoples of the area which is now south central Europe. The breed was eventually distributed as an exotic article of trade from the ancient island trading center of Malta, hence the name, and from there migrated by caravans to the farthest reaches of the civilized world, including: the Middle East, Tibet, China, the Philippines, and Japan.
