At the secondary school level, there are area and grammar schools, which provide five years of college preparatory courses, and trade schools, which provide three years of practical training. After secondary school, students pursue two years of study prior to entry to university. The only university in Malta is the University of Malta. It owes its origins to the Jesuit Collegium Melitense, founded in 1592, and became a university in 1769. It is the oldest university in the Commonwealth outside of the United Kingdom. It has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and its degrees are widely recognized. Many members of the mostly Maltese faculty have received their doctorates from Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh and other prestigious universities worldwide. First degree programs generally take three years with an additional one to two years for the Honors program, which requires a dissertation. A master's degree requires a further two years of study. Some areas also offer a master's in philosophy and doctoral programs. Progress is usually assessed through written assignments, tests and exams. An A-F grading scale applies. The teaching method combines teacher/student contact, through lectures and tutorials, with an emphasis on independent study. The academic year runs from September to June.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY T he more important collections covering Maltese archaeology are housed in the Auberge de Provence, Valletta, one of the Inns of the Knights of St. John. Collections of prehistoric pottery, sculpture, statuettes,stone implements and personal ornaments recovered from the Maltese megalithic temples and other prehistoric sites are exhibited. Typical examples of tomb furniture of the Punic and Roman periods are also displayed. THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS T his 18th century palace houses paintings, sculptures, furniture and other exhibits connected with the Order of St. John. Works by Domenico di Michelino, Carpaccio, Perugino, Tintoretto, Reni, Valentin, Mathias Stomer, Preti, Tiepolo, Favray and Vernet are permanently displayed. A section is specifically reserved for works by Maltese artists. Occasional exhibitions, together with concerts and lectures, are also held here. ln the monetarium a unique collection of coins and medals may be viewed by appointment. (See also "Mediterranean Congress Center"). ST JOHN'S CATHEDRAL AND MUSEUM S t. John's Co-Cathedral, formerly the Conventual Church of the Order, is historically and artistically one of the most important monuments on the island. It was built between 1573 and 1577 to the design of Gerolamo Cassar (1520-1586), chief engineer of the Order. The "Beheading of St. John", Caravaggio's masterpiece, hangs in the Oratory. Extractions: She was made of clay by an unknown priest/ess approximately 2700 B.C. At her time the island she was adored on was green with trees and inhabited with a folk that didn't know the need to protect itself against an enemy. She's known as "Sleeping Lady" and was found in the Hypogeum at Hal Safieni. The dreams survive. The Ggantija Temple on Gozo. This is one of the oldest temples on Malta/Gozo. It consists of two separate sub-temples of which the bigger one, in the south, was built at 3600 B.C. The northern one was finished approximately 600 years later. The third photograph shows the entrance stone with holes made maybe as a part of the temple door. The biggest stone is 4 x 5,5 meter and has weight of some 55 tons. The plan of the Ggantija Temple. Extractions: No 3 April 1995 Welcome to the first summer issue of the VLP report and some exciting news concerning the project. Following our involvement at the international conference Computer Applications in Archaeology in Leiden (Holland) we have had further coverage at an international level, this time at an EU directed conference at Thessaloniki (Greece). The EU Conference on Training and Education in Archaeology in European countries had the UK perspective given in a paper by Dr Simon Stoddart and Jenni Butterworth (both from the Department of Archaeology). Emphasis was made on the initiatives and projects underway within the University of Bristol, raising considerable interest from other European delegates. Particular emphasis was placed on the computer based initiatives currently being worked on in Bristol and other sites. The potential of the Internet in archaeological education and information exchange was a topic of great interest, something that Bristol is actively involved in. At the beginning of May the Department of Archaeology was called in at extremely short notice to arrange and set up an archaeology based exhibition on Maltese archaeology for the opening of the new Maltese High Commission in Piccadilly, London. The Departments long term involvement with Maltese archaeology (in its tenth year) and the Gozo Research Project (with the associated excavations at the Brochtorff Circle) were the basis for an exhibition entitled "Malta in the Dawn of Civilisation".

Explore Ggantija, the world's oldest known freestanding stone temples from approximately 3600 B.C.E.-predating the Giza pyramids by 1,000 years. Enjoy lunch and a visit to a local crafts market. Then a boat trip to the Azure Windows, a natural rock formation in Gozo's ruggedly beautiful shoreline. The ferry will return us to our hotel for dinner and our final overnight on Malta.
