High costs and licensing restrictions are key reasons educators are considering a switch. But Trask notes that is not the only reason. "Stability, ease of use, and ease of management all drove me to Linux," he adds. His school saved $5,000 this year alone in licensing fees to Microsoft with a move to open source. David Trask's Linux seminar was coordinated by Sharon Betts, the Technology Director for the Kennebunk School Dept. as well as the secretary for the Association of Computer Technology Educators of Maine (ACTEM). Betts approached Trask to host the event and share his experience and expert advice to demonstrate to state educators that Linux is a full featured and less expensive proposition than Microsoft.

Extractions: I grew up on an island, 12 miles off the coast of Maine. When I was 16, my friends and I called it "the rock." We had some appreciation for the fact that it was a great place to grow up and even some small understanding that our island public school, with about 70 students grades K-12, was unique and offered us unparalleled opportunities for learning and directing our own education. But with five students in my class, all of whom were girls, and just five boys in the junior class, by the time I graduated we were very ready to leave the "rock." Today, nearly 10 years later, I am back on the island representing my town and 11 other islands and small towns much like mine in the Maine State Legislature. Being in the legislature was a job I certainly hadnt imagined myself doing in my twenties when I was 16, but after just a year in office, it has turned out to be an incredible opportunity to join the process of progress and change. And now, as my hometown school and other small schools I represent struggle under new state and federal education requirements and funding decisions, I struggle with how to make any positive progress on these problems.

BEAMM, a National Science Foundation Local Systemic Change Initiative, is a partnership of 7 Maine school districts. Currently in year three of a five year process, the grant will provide 100 hours of professional development to more than 500 K-8 teachers. The focus of the professional development is to understand mathematical ideas and pedagogy for long term student achievement; create student-centered classrooms by using exemplary instruction, curriculum materials, and assessment practices; and to reflect on practices and participate in collegial discussions about teaching and learning. Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance is developing new instructional materials and an on-line tool to help teachers develop custom lessons with GLOBE resources. Four new GLOBE modules will be created, two for middle school and two for high school. The themes are Atmosphere and Coastal Ecosystems. Each lesson is designed to be used independently or integrated with current standards-based modules in the Lawrence Hall of Science FOSS-MS Program or Global System Science Program - In addition, an interactive program is being created that will assist teachers in creating their own customized lessons using GLOBE materials.
