Extractions: Financing a College Education Almost every family needs to plan carefully for expenses associated with college, whether they receive financial aid or not. Worry over finances should not prevent students from considering or applying to college. There are many, many resources available to help pay for a college education. Here is a quick description of some of those resources: Financial aid package: This money, which is usually a combination of both grants and loans, is made available to students by the college they attend. Each student's financial aid application is evaluated by the college financial aid officers, who determine what the student's financial need is, and how that need can be met through a variety of resources. Federal loan programs: Numerous federal programs exist which provide low-interest loans to students pursuing a college degree. These programs allow the student to receive the federal funds interest-free during their enrollment in college. Repayment, with low interest rates, usually begins six months after graduation and stretches out over the course of ten years. Examples of federal loan programs include the following: Federal Stafford Loan - This loan program is available for students who demonstrate financial need according to the federal guidelines. Loan limits are $2,625 for first-year students and increase to $3,500 for college sophomores, and to $5,500 for college juniors and seniors. The college financial aid office reviews the student's application and makes a recommendation regarding a Stafford Loan as part of the student's financial aid package. The interest rate is a variable rate, pegged to the 91-day Treasury Bill rate, and not to exceed 8.25%. No interest accrues or is due on these loans while the student is enrolled in college.
