Lessons From Maine Education Vouchers For Students Since 1873 schools of choice ranged from regular public schools to local academies such as Waynflete School in Portland, maine, to boarding schools ranging from Choate http://www.cato.org/pubs/briefs/bp-066es.html
Extractions: Education Vouchers for Students since 1873 by Frank Heller Frank Heller is an educational policy analyst and advocate of school choice. He is a cofounder of the Maine Children's Scholarship Fund, a privately funded organization that provides scholarships to children from low-income families to attend private schools. Executive Summary Time and time again citizens have voted to keep this system that has been described as "the most valued attribute" of living in Maine. It's unfortunate that one of the best features of Maine's educational system is limited to students who live in the "right" towns. Maine's policymakers should seek to facilitate greater educational opportunities for all students, and policymakers nationwide should look to Maine's extensive experience with vouchers to inform their education reform efforts. Cummings announced that he will be stepping down as Headmaster at the Pittsfield-based private school effective June 30, 2004 after what will be 18 years of service in that role. The announcement was made to the Administration, Faculty and Staff of the school on May 1, 2003 following Mr. Cummings' communication of his decision to the Board of Trustees. Following his departure from MCI, it is Cummings' intent to found his own educational consulting firm that focuses on strategic planning, organizational benchmarking, and board development and effectiveness. Doug and his wife Lori have lived at the Manson House, home of the Head of School, since 1986. Their children Jodi, Class of 1996; Jason, Class of 1998; and Jennifer, Class of 2002, graduated from Maine Central Institute. Hodgins said, "It will be difficult to picture MCI in another year without Doug and Lori Cummings as a main part of the school's community. They have long been an integral part of what the school is all about."
Extractions: Music Festival SEARCH The majority of the students at Chop Point School are day students coming from the mid-coast area of Maine. Chop Point has bus service for the following towns: Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Topsham, Bath, Woolwich, Edgecomb, Wiscasset, Randolph, Pittston, Dresden and Richmond . Students in these areas can meet a school vehicle at predefined locations and times, usually between 7:20 and 7:45. School begins promptly at 8:25am and all students should plan to arrive at school by 8:15am. The school day ends at 2:30pm. In most cases, students using school transportation are returned to the morning pickup locations, by 3:25pm. Chop Point firmly believes it is offering an education superior to the public schools. We are accomplishing this task on a budget much smaller than that of the public schools because of the sacrificial attitudes of the teachers and staff. Before enrolling a child in Chop Point School, parents should give serious consideration to their ability to afford private education. Reviews The Hyde School Connecticut and Maine NAWA Academy near Redding Warning about Harsh residential schools See also: Schools for Kids with Learning or Emotional Problems November 2002 I am looking for a residential school for my teenaged son who, while very bright, has severe emotional problems. We have exhausted all local options and feel that a therapeutic/residential program may be the best option now. This is not a sudden decision and we would like to be sure that the school we pick will really serve his needs. I noticed that there was some discussion on this topic here a few years ago but I wondered if anyone had more recent experience, particularly whether someone could recommend a school by name, preferably one on or near the West Coast? Also, does anyone know the name of a good counselor who specializes in placing children in residential schools? Anonymous worried mom I have worked with two ed consultants and would be happy to discuss my experience. I think it's important to have a good psychological evaluation of your child done before trying to select a placement. Until you know exactly what the issues are it's hard to select a place that can address them. -A mom who's had similar challenges

MCI is one of the "Big 10" private secondary schools in Maine that still serves the public school population as well. The school is located on a 23-acre campus and conducts its programs within fourteen buildings. Of these, 4 are academic, 3 are residential dormitories, 3 are houses, and 2 are gymnasiums. One of the academic buildings, Founders Hall, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and provides a stately and proud center for the campus, situated behind an attractive green facing South Main Street. MCI has always had a boarding population, with a high of 240 residential students in the 1960's. At that time and until the early 1990's, most boarders were post-graduate athletes preparing for college. During much of the school's history, it has served as the public high school. Boarding students are matched with a local host family, and warm and lasting relationships have been forged through these opportunities. In addition to the SAD#53 and boarding students, fourteen private tuition day students attended MCI during 1996-97.
