Mini-Project Proposal For Mailing List Efforts Adding such code will require a separate reorganization of the mailing list software, in order to teach it about parts of MIME messages, and to have it use http://www.well.com/~xanthian/public/documents/MiniProject.html
Extractions: Mailing List Mini-Project Proposal Kent Paul Dolan There are many possible projects that could be focused around mailing list capability for Whistle-Ware that might fit within the time and staff limitations proposed for our mini-projects. Before choosing one, let's consider some of the possibilities. We could enable outside mailing lists as an eyeball attracting tool for Whistle-Ware user sites. We could work at better reconciling the inevitable conflict between keeping the UI as simple as possible, for the sake of marketing and the users, so we can market software that sells and is easy to use, and keeping the UI as complex as necessary, for the sake of engineering and the users, so we can build software that works and is fruitful to use. We could analyze more carefully what administrative user interface exposure is needed to assure that mailing list administrators can tailor Whistle-Ware sufficiently to assure inter-operability with other Internet mail and mailing list software

Extractions: Search MAA Online MAA Home While the WWW may seem for the present to have stolen the show, people still get a lot of work done by writing to each other over the Internet. If volume is a good indicator, teachers thirst for opportunities to talk with others who share their interests and concerns. Newsgroups and mailing lists abound on just about any conceivable subject. Finding the right group, however, can be a challenge. Given a captive audience, some will abuse the privilege. You may learn of a group focused on the right topic only to find that the conversation is dominated by unproductive harangues, or wanders too far afield. Sometimes you join but there's no one there, or ideas come flying so fast that it's hard to achieve anything close to a conversation. Perhaps you are limited to email access but the discussion you want is taking place only on the Web or within a newsgroup. (There are usually ways to get around such limitations, but it can take extra energy to conquer the obstacles.) Since even in the best of situations the medium is not yet mature, many people are working together to define norms and productive formats that will help us realize its full potential. Even now, depending on their interests and purpose math educators have a number of solid options.
