Sommers Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Université de Paris-Sud, Orsay, France The magnetic properties of Co n /Pt(100), Co n /Pt(111), (Co Pt n /Pt(100), (CoPt) n /Pt(100) and (CoPt) n /Pt(111), n 15, are investigated using the fully relativistic spin-polarized Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. It is found that only the artificial superstructures (CoPt) n /Pt(100) and (CoPt) n /Pt(111) show a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy beyond n=10. For the free surfaces of Co on Pt in the case of the (100) orientation a multiple reorientation transition below n=7 is found, while along (111) such a transition is predicted at about 4 layers of Co. For the homogeneous, statistically disordered alloy Co Pt on Pt(100) the orientation of the magnetization remains in-plane for all n investigated. A comparison to experiment yields an interesting insight into aspects of order and disorder, surface segregation and phase separation frequently encountered in experimental studies of perpendicular magnetism in the Co/Pt system.

New studies utilizing these particles and ferrofluids in unique ways are continually appearing in the scientific literature and there are now many companies which produce these products both for research and clinical applications. In addition to synthesizing ferrimagnetic nanoparticles, we have been developing methods for synthesizing low-moment superparamagnetic rod-like particles with diameters of about 6nm and lengths of up to several hundred nanometres [6, 7].     Extractions: In early solar system history there are several electromagnetic processes expected that may be capable of magnetizing the primitive solid particles condensating from the Solar Nebula. The record of these magnetic events can be observed during laboratory studies of meteorites found on the Earth. Different terrestrial processes can affect the magneto mineralogy, can cause changes in magnetic parameters, and can overprint the primary magnetic record. The effect of surface heating (when falling through the atmosphere) was the subject of the study with the Murchison meteorite. Using the Allende meteorite we studied the effect of the shock pressure generated by the friction of the atmosphere during the meteorite fall. Some of the meteorites are found several days after the fall, some of them are deposited in the desert or on the Antarctic ice for thousands of years. Most of them contain visible traces of terrestrial oxidation and weathering The project is a part of Tomas Kohout 's Ph.D. thesis (graduate student at Department of Applied Geophysics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic and graduate student at Division of Geophysics, Department of Physical Sciences, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland) and is based on existing collaboration among following institutions:

    Extractions: fcc Fe is one of the materials with the most interesting interplay between structural and magnetic properties. It can be stabilized by pseudomorphic growth on suitable substrates. Ultrathin fcc Fe films have been studied on Cu(001) and Cu Au(001) single crystal surfaces. Here we show how the structural and magnetic properties develop when grown on Cu Au (001), which exhibits a lattice constant in between that of Cu and Cu Au. Ultrathin FeMn films on Cu(001) An important prerequisite for studying the magnetic coupling across the interface between a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic ultrathin film is the preparation of single-crystalline antiferromagnetic films with well-defined structural and interface properties. FeMn is an ideal candidate for such studies because of its low lattice misfit to Cu (0.4%). We investigated the growth and structure of FeMn/Cu(001) and found that it grows layer-by-layer, showing a virtually unstrained fcc structure and low surface roughness.

    Extractions: B uilding on our ability to manipulate the magnetic properties of atoms in two-dimensions , we have turned our synthesis efforts to address an important problem in condensed matter physics - the unusual physics that result from the placement of spins on a low dimensional magnetically frustrated lattice. A kagomé lattice, which is composed of vertex sharing triangles, presents an ideal construct for studying this problem in magnetism. We are exploring jarosite compounds of the formula AM O(OH) (SO (A = monovalent ion, M = magnetic trivalent ion), which have been long recognized as ideal model kagomé lattices. M (OH) triangles (panel (a)) are linked at their corners to form the triangular kagomé lattice in a 2-dimensional hexagonal network (panel (b)). The sulfate capping groups alternately point up and down about the hexagonal network. The kagomé layers are separated by A ions (panel (c)). P rior to our work, jarosite-type materials had escaped precise magnetic characterization over the past three decades because they are notoriously difficult to prepare in pure and crystalline forms. These hurdles have been overcome with our development of new redox-based hydrothermal methods . Armed with pure and crystalline materials, several perplexing issues surrounding the magnetic properties of the jarosites have been resolved

In insulators, however, they barely move, lacking the energy to overcome high resistance. Strangely, scientists can turn certain unusual insulators into high-temperature superconductors by adding the right impurities. Conventional theories predict that these insulators should actually be ordinary conductors. Researchers are still working to understand the exotic magnetic properties of these materials, which are strongly influenced by their quantum nature. ``These materials have extremely exotic properties that really have eluded physical description,`` says Martin Greven, an assistant professor in Stanford`s Department of Applied Physics and at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. ``We are interested in arriving at a quantitative understanding of their magnetic properties.`` With Stanford graduate students Owen Vajk and Patrick Mang and physicists Peter Gehring and Jeffrey Lynn at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Greven has been trying to understand the complex magnetic behavior of the insulators as magnetic atoms are randomly replaced with nonmagnetic impurity atoms. Instead of yielding a superconductor, the introduction of nonmagnetic impurities creates a novel model magnet.
