Extractions: Ferdinand Magellan Early Years Magellan set sail for the Spice Islands on September 20, 1519. There were five ships and 265 men under his command. He took trinkets to trade with native along the way, and enough food for two years. He would not tell anyone where they were going, not even the captains. Magellan's secrecy caused problems with the captains who sailed the other ships. They didn't like being kept in the dark about Magellan's plans. This eventually lead to an unsuccessful mutiny during the voyage. On December 15, Magellan's fleet landed on the coast of Brazil. The natives that they met were friendly. The men traded trinkets for fresh fruit and meat. Magellan felt that he had converted the natives to Christianity. He liked that idea very much! They continued down the coast, looking for the strait. On January 10, 1520, they spotted a huge bay. To make sure that this was the strait, he sent his men into the bay to explore. Two weeks later, he was disappointed when his men returned, and had found a big river, but no strait. That meant that they had to keep sailing south.. When Magellan reached what is now called Port San Julian, he told the ships to drop anchor, and they spent the winter there. It was at this port that Magellan successfully stopped a mutiny. When the worst of winter was over, they once again began their search for the strait.

Then, I will tell you why he should win the "Explorer of the Century Award." Last, I shall tell you about me as an explorer. Magellan lived a short life of about 40 years. Magellan was born around 1480 in Oporto, Portugal. There is little known about Magellan's childhood, but we do know that when he was 12 years old, he was a page at the Portuguese court. While Magellan was a page, he met another page named Francisco Serrao. Serrao turned out to be a friend to Magellan for both of their entire lives. Serrao also grew up to be an explorer. Magellan and Serrao were promoted to squires together. Magellan was killed on April 27, 1521 during his explorations. Magellan faced many dangers both before and during his explorations. Here are some of them. Before his explorations, Magellan was sent into battle multiple times. He was injured in one of the battles. During his explorations, three of Magellan's ships were taken over. Luckily, Magellan regained control of his ships. Magellan and his men came close to starving. They had to eat sawdust because they were so low on food. Those were only some of the dangers that Magellan faced. Here are the main reasons why Magellan should win the "Explorer of the Century Award:" he led the crew that was the first to circumnavigate the world. Magellan also named the Pacific Ocean, and when his ships were taken over, he was able to regain control of them.

Extractions: You are in: Museum of History Hall of Explorers Ferdinand Magellan Ferdinand Magellan was the leader of the first expedition to circumnavigate the real world. He was the first European to sail across the Pacific Ocean and discovered a route by which ships could sail a complete circle around the world. The Straits of Magellan, located at the Southern tip of South America are named for him. This strait proved to be the connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The voyage proceeded along the coast of South America and on December 18th headed west into the Pacific. One month into the voyage, hardships were encountered. Supplies were depleting, food and drinking water were scarce. Many of the crew died of scurvy. Land was sighted but no landfall was made until Magellan reached the Marianas (or Ladrone) Islands by March of 1521. There he took on more provisions. Landing on the island of Cebu on April 7th, he was received in a friendly manner by the chief and ruler of the island. After eight days, Magellan was able to covert the ruler to Christianity along with hundreds of natives. The ruler agreed to aid him in an attack on the natives of neighboring island, Mactan. There, involved in fighting with natives, Magellan was killed on April 27, 1521. The two remaining ships were refitted and spices purchased. Under Juan Sebastian del Cano they set sail for the return voyage to Spain. Only one ship, the Victoria, with a crew of only eighteen men and 4 East Indians reached Seville, Spain on September 8, 1522 after a voyage across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope and north through the Atlantic. Completing a voyage of more than three years, they had succeeded in circumnavigating the globe. The spices they brought them amply repaid the expenses of the voyage.

Ferdinand Magellan T he Europeans discovered the extraordinary scene of Arab, Malay, Chinese and Birman ships loading spices in a busy atmosphere. The merchants started to panic when they saw the Portuguese. B ut the Sultan of Malacca was quick enough to react, and the Europeans were trapped by him, and barely escape to India with their lives. Murder of Magellan on the island of Mactan F ew years after, in 1511, the Portuguese under Albuquerque conquer Malacca, and three ships set sail for the Spice Islands. 1519, Magellan sets sail westward in search of the Spice Islands via a new route. 1521, Magellan is killed in the Philippines.

European rulers gave money and ships to sailors, and explorers. That is how Ferdinand Magellan got to go with his three captains to sail to the beyond. He then was off to the beyond. Ferdinand Magellan sailed beyond him. He sailed to the Pacific Ocean. When he got to the ocean he named it the Pacific. When he was in the middle of the ocean he died. The Philippines were the people who killed him. His men were trying to save him but most of his men died fighting.

After much hardship he succeeded in reaching and then sailing across the Pacific Ocean.
