Extractions: for the Home by Jamie McKenzie With the explosion of home access to the Web, we are looking at a "New HomeWork." Given the lag between home access (for the affluent) and school access in many places, schools must consider ways to help parents help students make profitable use of this home access. This article may be duplicated in hard copy format free by schools for use with parents. All other duplication is prohibited without permission. The Internet is deceptively easy. You can log on pretty much automatically. You can find information without much trouble at all. Finding truth is quite another matter. This is a great opportunity to support your children, helping them to identify reliable sources, notice bias, resist propaganda and develop their own independent ideas based upon research. If you raise your children on a steady diet of Internet information well leavened with lessons on how to browse, sort, sift, cull and synthesize, you will see a tremendous pay-off as they pass through school and into the job market. Using the Internet as a learning tool requires a substantial degree of independence and ingenuity. Because of the rich assortment of electronic information online, there is no need for cumbersome, hard copy, print encyclopedias to support home research.

Indeed, TV news and the Internet aside, those famous words spoken by humorist Will Rogers ring truer today than ever. Rogers wouldn't recognize the newspaper of the 1990s - the variety of news it offers; the abundance of photos; the text peppered with charts, graphs, and maps. Today more than ever, the newspaper is a source for all one needs to know. And, more than ever, teachers recognize the usefulness and importance of "using the news" and of developing students who have good newsreading skills and an awareness of current events. Kitao-Why Do We Teach English? (ITESLJ) English or studying the teaching of English, but why do we want to teach English, as In India alone, there are three thousand magazines published in English. http://iteslj.org/Articles/Kitao-WhyTeach.html
Extractions: k.kitao [at] lancaster.ac.uk We are teaching English or studying the teaching of English, but why do we want to teach English, as opposed to other foreign languages? It is useful for us to consider this basic question occasionally. English is not the most widely spoken language in the world in terms of the number of native speakersthere are many more Chinese speakers than native English speakersbut Chinese is spoken little outside of Chinese communities, so English is the most widespread language in the world. It is difficult to estimate exactly how many English speakers there are, but according to one estimate there are more than 350,000,000 native English speakers and more than 400,000,000 speakers of English as a second language (a language used in everyday life, even though it is not the native language) or foreign language (a language studied but not used much in everyday life). However, even these numbers do not really indicate how important English is as a world language, because less than fifteen percent of the world population uses English. The importance of English is not just in how many people speak it but in what it is used for. English is the major language of news and information in the world. It is the language of business and government even in some countries where it is a minority language. It is the language of maritime communication and international air traffic control, and it is used even for internal air traffic control in countries where it is not a native language. American popular cultureprimarily movies and musiccarries the English language throughout the world.
Extractions: How to handle Pornography Some parents might think the only way to stop the infiltration of pornography into the minds of their children is by simply cutting off the source of the material. They would consider, for instance, not even installing or disconnecting the internet from the home. But while this may solve the problem temporarily, it does not teach young Muslims how to deal with this material when they see it everywhere else: on television, billboards on the street, or magazines, for instance. Nor does it encourage them to avoid this material when they have the opportunity to look at it outside of parental control. Below are some tips to help your child avoid pornography whenever and wherever he or she encounters it. Please note though, this is not a comprehensive list of possibilities, nor should all of the strategies presented be used on your child. Choose the right ones that can help him or her depending on age, and previous exposure to pornography. Tip #1: Establish your right and authority as a parent to know This is not something done by yelling and screaming. It's done calmly in all aspects of family life, and should be made clear on other issues, like who has the final say to decide when is bedtime or who decides 14-year-old Ilyas's curfew. Establish parental authority gently and wisely. It's easier to do this when kids are young.

Briefly describe the "sections" (ie. local news, world news, editorials, etc.). What were the grade levels for the target audience? What was the format and how did this contribute to the focus? Diagram the format for each magazine using a flowchart. How user friendly was the format? Evaluate the ease of use. Were there related links in each magazine and what were they? Who would your target audience be? Which grades would produce the magazine? What will your focus (or theme) be? Think of a title.

Extractions: Physics Life is part of the physics.org web site, a search facility that answers your questions about physical science with a list of relevant web sites from its database. The animation begins with a street in which you can explore the buildings, areas and objects that you see. The graphics become animated and make noises when you hover your mouse over them, and you can click to zoom in and enter buildings and places. You can try the playground, where clicking a football activates a pop-up box that tells you about curling a football in flight. Each pop-up box contains general information about the activity, written informally, as well as links for more information from physics.org.
