Extractions: There are certain things that define and characterize every culture. Among these are the art, music, food, and clothing that make each cultural group different. This section of the site seeks to illustrate the facets of life which make the Macedonian people unique in the world. Selections from The Elia E. Kalkoff Orchestra Steve Jugloff is very likely the first person ever to create and perform Macedonian music entirely with electronic instruments. These songs were recorded in his home studio in the early 1970's with the current 'state-of-the-art' keyboard synthesizers. The selections are primarily traditional, with some original material and a unique interpretation. These are beautiful songs performed by the female vocal group, The Dubonettes. The recordings were made in the early 1960s, and have recently been remastered to compact disc. We are not certain if the recordings are available for sale at this time, but have heard that the group is perfoming again! We hope that you enjoy these selections, and we will pass along more information about the group as it becomes available.

Cynical. Even sinister. It is clear that this year the Macedonian hospitality will not welcome the guests that it longed for. Macedonia is a hot topic for the world, but regarding something very different from the subject of this web-site. Tragically, many young people gave their hearts (their lives) for Macedonia, and their families and the entire state is left in mourning. We dedicate the web-site "Come to Macedonia and Your Heart Will Remain Here" to all the people that, in the first year of the third millennia, gave their lives for Macedonia, who were killed in the ridiculous attacks of the forces bereft of reason. Also, we dedicate it to all people who do not surrender to this absurdity, but who still make all their noble efforts for the benefit of peace, friendship, democracy, love, humanity, culture. To all Macedonian children and all Macedonian parents of all religions and nationalities, who fight to preserve Macedonia, who fight with their guns or with their creations. To Macedonia, the country where the words respect and tolerance were more than shallow phrases. The country that has managed, as stale and prosaic as it may sound, to remain the oasis of peace on the turbulent Balkans.

In a buttered pan, lay a layer of the filo dough, spread a layer of the mixture. Finish with a layer of filo dough. Then cut the banitsa into serving pieces. The Slavonic alphabet was born in Macedonia, where the Macedonian educators Cyril and Methody , and Clement and Naum played an important part in the spread of Christianity. Macedonian builders and mosaic masters shone like a bright star in the dark period of European culture prior to the Renaissance. Scholars and writers often refer to Macedonia as a magical country for archaeology - there are many historical sites, including those at Stobi (Gradsko), Heraclea Lyncestis (Bitola), Lychnidos (Ohrid) and Scupi (Skopje). In the site of Vinicko Kale (near Vinica), the discovery of terracotta icons aroused great interest among historians and archaeologists. The Basilica Mosaic in Heraclea Lyncestis is one of the most famous mosaics of antiquity. There are many remains from Roman times and the early Christian period. Macedonian cities have an imposing number of churches. The famous architects and fresco-painters worked on numerous churches, and in Ohrid alone their number exceeds 30. Lake Ohrid and the town of Ohrid are under the protectin of UNESCO. Several churches, the most renowned among which is St. Pantelejmon, bear witness to the times of the educator St. Clement. Extractions: Ancient Macedonian culture Pre-Slavic Culture in Macedonia Prehistory. The geographic location of Macedonia allowed contact between two cultural spheres: the Aegean and the Anatolian. This contact was the reason why Macedonia since prehistory took a significant part in the cultural development of the Balkans. The finds at Vrshnik, near Tarinci (in the region of Shtip) are proof of the existence of the "Vrshnik" or east Balkan culture of the Neolithic. The Neolithic sites by Anzabegovo (also near Shtip), by Zelenikovo and Madzari (near Skopje), Buchim (Radovish), Lopate (Kumanovo), and somewhat later in Pelagonia and Ohrid, where primitive pottery has been discovered, prove that a native cultural tradition-though a tradition susceptible to outside influences, especially from the east-developed in Macedonia. This Neolithic development was discontinued at the beginning of the second millennium B.C. in the early transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (2600-1200 B.C.). Sites from this period have been discovered in Macedonia at Skopje, Crnobuka, Shuplevac and Bakarno Gumno. The discoveries at these sites include stone houses, pottery with smooth coatings, graphite-painted ornaments, roughly stylized seated figures and roughly-modeled figures with an opening on the upper part and a modeled head. The discovery of graves in Demir Kapia (near Bitola) by Saray Brod and the central grave from Viso (also near Bitola) are significant, as all take the form of a stone chest; the existence of a special kind of local, painted ceramic known as babushti ceramics; research on necropolises in Eastern Macedonia by Radanje and Orlovi Chuki; research on the graves under the tombs in Orizari (near Kochani), Vuchidol and Brazda (near Skopje); all provide ample information about the life and cultural circumstances of Macedonia during the Iron Age (1200-400 B.C.). The last centuries of this era represent a period of strong Hellenistic influences over the region, noticeable both in the processing of ceramics and in the common forms of jewelry, metallic vessels and other metallic articles found at Trebenishte, Radolishte, Vsoi, Tegovo and at other sites throughout Macedonia.
