These histologies are often classified together because, when localized, all have the potential for cure with surgical resection. Systemic chemotherapy can produce objective partial responses and palliation of symptoms for short durations in patients with advanced disease. Local control can be achieved with radiation in a large number of patients with unresectable disease, but cure is seen only in a small minority of patients. At diagnosis, patients with NSCLC can be divided into 3 groups that reflect the extent of disease and treatment approach. The first group of patients has tumors that are surgically resectable (generally stages I and II). This is the group with the best prognosis, depending on a variety of tumor and host factors. Patients with resectable disease who have medical contraindications to surgery can be considered for curative radiation therapy.

Extractions: Lung Cancer Web T he National Familial Lung Cancer Registry was established at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in September 1993. The Registry is directed by and is coordinated by Michelle S. McCullough . The goals of the Registry are: 1) to further our understanding of the causes of lung cancer (beyond smoking), and 2) to serve as an educational resource for persons at risk for lung cancer. Over 270 lung cancer families are registered to date. So far, research with these families includes studies of DNA repair capacity and genetic markers and their relationship to environmental factors. I f two or more people in a family have been diagnosed with lung cancer, the family is eligible to be part of the Registry. Family members and patients can refer themselves to the National Familial Lung Cancer Registry, as well as those referred by physicians. Each patient/family referred will be sent a family medical and smoking history questionnaire. In addition we will need to obtain a consent to release medical records on family members with lung cancer. This will allow us to review the medical records and pathology slides of each affected family member to confirm all cases. F amily members who have participated in our study have written letters describing how lung cancer has affected their families and the families' experience with our research study. We urge persons from families in which more than one family member has had lung cancer to register their families. Anyone interested in referring a family to the Registry or anyone who needs more information should contact:

Messner, a guest on CNN's "Larry King Live," said she was told of the diagnosis two weeks ago. "They can't take it out because it's too near the heart and there are too many blood vessels that are near the cancer," Messner said. She said she will begin chemotherapy treatment soon. For years Messner and Jim Bakker were Christian television's most prominent couple. In 1989, Bakker was sentenced to four years in prison for defrauding their followers of millions. Messner's popularity continued to grow and in 2000 a documentary film, "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," was released to critical acclaim. The film was billed as the other side of the Tammy Faye story, the one opposite the story that played out in the tabloids.

Exposure to carcinogens , such as those present in tobacco smoke , immediately causes small changes to the tissue lining the bronchi of the lungs (the bronchial mucous membrane ). This effect is cumulative, and over time with continued exposure more and more tissue gets damaged until a tumour develops. If the tumour grows inwards it may obstruct the air passageway, causing breathing difficulties. The lungs may then collapse and infections can develop, leading to lung abscess . The patient here would start to cough up blood-stained material. However, if the tumour grows outwards in to the lung it may not even be noticed by the patient before it starts to spread to other parts of the body. Lung cancer death accounts for about 30% of all cancer deaths. In the past few years, lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the number one cause of cancer death in women, and its incidence rates continue to increase in female patients. These are distressing figures given the fact that lung cancer would be rare if not for cigarette smoking. More than 80% of lung cancer cases are related to smoking. Other important causes of lung cancer include exposure to asbestos and Radon. Lung cancer represents a major health problem not only in the United States, but also worldwide. Most lung cancers begin to grow silently, without any symptoms. Patients with lung cancer often do not develop symptoms until the cancer is in an advanced stage. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy has all be utilized in the treatment of lung carcinoma. However, the overall survival of all lung cancer patients are essentially unchanged in the past two decades. This information booklet has been written to help you understand more about carcinoma of the lung.
