Each lung is composed of smooth, shiny lobes: the right lung has three lobes and the left has two. About 90% of the lung is filled with air; only 10% is solid tissue. Capillaries, the smallest of our blood vessels, carry blood throughout the body. Lung Cancer Lung cancer develops when genetic mutations occur in a normal cell within the lung, causing it to become abnormal in shape and behavior and to reproduce ceaselessly. Such abnormal cells form a tumor that, if not surgically removed, invades neighboring blood vessels and lymph nodes and spreads to nearby sites. Eventually, the cancer can metastasize to locations throughout the body. The two major categories of lung cancer are non-small cell lung cancer and s mall cell lung cancer . The results suggest that people who drink a glass or two of alcohol a day have the same chances of developing lung cancer as nondrinkers. In previous studies, alcohol consumption has been linked to both higher and lower risks of lung cancer. The authors of this latest study, which was published in the Dec. 18, 2002, issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, speculate that these inconsistencies may be due to confounding factors. For example, drinking is sometimes done in smoky locations, such as bars, and in those cases, lung cancer could be the result of exposure to secondhand smoke rather than alcohol consumption. A team of researchers, led by Dr. Luc Djoussé of the Boston University School of Medicine, studied data from 4,265 participants in the Framingham Heart Study. That epidemiological study, which has been going on since 1948, examines the health of thousands of residents of a Massachusetts town through biennial questionnaires and physical checkups.

Without treatment, small cell carcinoma of the lung has the most aggressive clinical course of any type of pulmonary tumor, with median survival from diagnosis of only 2 to 4 months. Compared with other cell types of lung cancer, small cell carcinoma has a greater tendency to be widely disseminated by the time of diagnosis, but is much more responsive to chemotherapy and irradiation. Because patients with small cell lung cancer tend to develop distant metastases, localized forms of treatment, such as surgical resection or radiation therapy, rarely produce long-term survival. [ ] However, with incorporation of current chemotherapy regimens into the treatment program, survival is unequivocally prolonged, with at least a 4- to 5-fold improvement in median survival compared with patients who are given no therapy. Furthermore, about 10% of the total population of patients remain free of disease over 2 years from the start of therapy, the time period during which most relapses occur. However, even these patients are at risk of dying from lung cancer (both small and non-small cell types). [ ] The overall survival at 5 years is 5% to 10%. [

Lung Cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer among both men and women in the United States. There are two main types of lung cancer. Types of lung cancer There are two kinds of lung cancers. The two main kinds are primary and secondary. Primary lung cancer starts in the lung itself. Primary lung cancer is divided into small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, depending on how the cells look under the microscope. Each type of Primary lung cancer grows and spreads in different ways. Secondary lung cancer is cancer that starts somewhere else in the body (for example, the breast or colon) and spreads to the lungs. Small cell cancer was formerly called oat cell cancer, because the cells resemble oats in their shape. About a fourth of all lung cancers are small cell cancers. This type is a very aggressive cancer and spreads to other organs within a short time. It is generally found in people who are heavy smokers. Non-small cell cancers account for about 75% of lung cancers. This type of lung cancer grows and spreads more slowly than small cell cancer. There are three main types of nonsmall cell lung cancer. The types are named for the type of cell in which the cancer develops. The types are: squamous cell carcinoma (also called epidermoid carcinoma), adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.
