Extractions: International Study Programs LC in Israel Additional Information LC in Israel Additional Information Two Professors Make Israel Their Classroom During the summer semester of 2000, two LC classes met in Israel to study Biblical Geography, taught by Dr. Carlton Winbery and Archaeology, taught by Dr. Fred Downing. Sixteen students, instructors, and friends of LC traveled to Isreal and Jordan in order to study Biblical backgrounds in the land of the origins of Judaism and Christianity. The class in Biblical Geography included reading two textbooks and participating in the discussions on site. At the Herodian port of Caesarea students visited the ancient theater that was renovated by Pontius Pilate and dedicated by him to Tiberius Caesarea. The Pilate inscription found there is important to archaeologists. Tel Megiddo is an impressive mound with 26 layers or strata indicating that the city was destroyed and rebuilt many times. Cities such as Nazareth, Capernaum, Chorazim, and Bethsaida show to visitors the distances and topography of the area where Jesus spent most of his adult life. Sailing on the Sea of Galilee is an experience of a lifetime and has a wonderful way of orienting students to the locations of these important cities. After traveling down the Fariah valley the class visited Jericho, the most ancient city ever excavated. Then the group went to Jerusalem from which they visited sites in the old city, Bethany, Qumran, En Gedi, Masada, and Cypros, the winter palace of Herod near Jericho. Also the group traveled through the rolling hills south west of Jerusalem to Tel Beth-Shemesh, Ashqelon, Lachish, Maresha, and the valleys of Elah and Soriq. In the city of Jerusalem the group visited the Temple Mount, Mt. of Olives, Gethsemene, Via Dolorosa, a number of churches, and Gordon's Calvary. Some of the most spectacular excavations were those below the Temple Mount and in the city of David.

Extractions: American Frontiers: A Public Lands Journey Beyond popular national parks such as Yosemite and Grand Canyon, lies an enormous tract of other U.S. public lands classified under dozens of designations. These areas are known as National Forests, National Wildlife Refuges, National Recreation Areas, and many other titles. Together, they comprise approximately a third of the land in America. This vast area is owned collectively by all Americans, and it's up to Americans as a nation to determine the future of the land. Yet many Americans, particularly in the East where public lands are scarce, remain unaware of the extent of public lands and the special trust they have been afforded to control its fate. Two pairs of Alliance teachers who started their trek across U.S. public lands today, make their final preparations with Ed Foundation's program manager, Nancee Hunter (with globe) in Salt Lake City last week. The women are traveling north from the Mexico-New Mexico border; the men are headed south from the Canada-Montana border.
