In an historical focus of EEE transmission in rural and suburban Louisiana, we study probable vectors of EEE and WNV, Culiseta melanura, Culex salinarius and Cx. nigripalpus. ASPH/CDC/ATSDR Cooperative Agreement Program (10/99-9/01), and more recently through a grant from the Johnston Science Foundation In urban New Orleans, we study the probable vectors of SLE and WNV, Cx. quinquefasciatus and Aedes albopictus . Rather than the regular grid pattern used in the rural collections, mosquito collection sites target different land use types and attempt to spatially represent the urban area. More than 30 collection sites are sampled every 3-4 weeks using CO baited light traps, gravid traps and larval collections. These data are then examined with a GIS for potential correlation with human demographic information (derived from recent census data) and other habitat and climactic variables as described above. This work is ultimately designed to identify the types of urban habitat most likely to produce important arbovirus vectors.
