Extractions: Parent Educators located in different regions of the state provide family-centered early intervention to assist parents in enhancing natural interaction and communication with their child who is deaf or hard of hearing. Through the Parent-Pupil Education Program, families are offered instruction, information, and support to assist them in meeting the unique needs of the hearing-impaired child. The PPEP hosts a Family Learning Vacation each summer here at L.S.D. This is a wonderful experience during which entire families from throughout the state spend a weekend together learning about deafness. While parents participate in various workshops about Deaf culture, Deaf psychology, and modes of communication, their deaf and hearing children enjoy structured activities together in a camp-like atmosphere. Through the many experiences of this weekend, it is hoped that parents acquire information and skills to help them meet the challenges of rearing a hearing-impaired child.
