Extractions: "Earth Day Every Day" proclaims the official sign for Merrill Middle School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, just south of my town, Appleton. That's me behind the sign, feeling rather uninspired by the school's apparent emphasis on environmental activism instead of academics. Imagine what our kids could do and learn if every day was math day, history day, science day, and reading and writing day? It almost staggers the imagination, but maybe they would graduate with actual competence in math, history, science, and English. Introduction: my views The benefits of Direct Instruction The problem with block scheduling (a separate page) The evidence speaks: Competition is good for education (a separate page in my " Snippets " area) Public education versus home schooling Striving for mediocrity: The war against excellence Suggestions to improve public schools The disappointment of middle schools ... Links related to education In many elementary and secondary schools, education seems more focused on fostering attitudes ("affective education") than on teaching. Self-esteem is sometimes treated as the ultimate goal, while many parents are clamoring for a return to academics. With 4 children attending public schools, I want real education to occur. Sadly, many schools focus on popular "reforms" and new programs that detract from academics. Goals 2000, workforce education, block scheduling , affective education, whole language, and the emphasis on "developmentally appropriate" education often represent deters from what parents really want and from what I believe kids really need: mastery of academic skills and acquisition of basic knowledge in core areas.

Extractions: No. 16 Fall 1999 1999 Medical Job Fair Links Residents to Facilities The results are in! Based on participant evaluations, the 1999 Medical Job Fair of Louisiana was an overwhelming success. Resident and practicing physicians stated that the Job Fair provided an avenue for evaluating multiple options in one setting. Exhibitors were pleased with the number and quality of the residents attending the fair. The fair attracted several pediatricians from a board review meeting taking place in the Hyatt at the same time. This added to the excitement due to the large demand around the state for pediatricians . The site of the 1999 Job Fair was the Hyatt Regency New Orleans Hotel. The Hyatt was selected due to its proximity to the medical schools and the available exhibit space configurations. Breakout sessions were conducted adjacent to the exhibit hall, allowing participants to move between events easily and with minimal time loss. The layout of food and beverages in the exhibit area proved to be a big hit with exhibitors. Placing food and beverages adjacent to booths increased the interaction between exhibitors and medical participants. Seventy-seven (77) resident and practicing physicians attended the fair. The number of physicians was in line with prior years; 68 in 1997 and 78 in 1996. Approximately 40 residents attended the 1998 fair in spite of the tropical storm that flooded New Orleans during the fair. The 1999 residency programs represented included Alton Ochsner, Tulane, Baton Rouge General, Baylor Family Practice in Houston, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of Texas-Beaumont as well as the following LSU programs; Shreveport, Monroe, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Kenner and New Orleans.
