In a state with as much water as Louisiana it is difficult to think ourselves back to a time when every lake, river, and bayou except three had to be crossed by boat. That was 1928. But here's an even more staggering challenge to the imagination. Go back almost a century further and think of the state of Louisiana with a grand total of 26 churches and 24 priests. It's no wonder then that Bishop Leo De Neckere, the fifth bishop of New Orleans, was tempted to highjack four French Jesuits who arrived in the port of New Orleans in January of 1831. They were on their way to Bardstown, Kentucky to help Bishop Flaget in his new diocese. Bishop De Neckere succeeded in detaining them almost a year and even after three of them departed one, Fr. Pierre Ladavidre, continued to work in New Orleans and Southern Louisiana as a traveling missionary. When Bishop De Neckere died Fr. Ladavidre administered the diocese sede vacante along with the vicar-General, Antoine Blanc. When the latter was appointed bishop of New Orleans in 1835 he made it his first priority to get more priests from Europe. When he sailed for France in 1836 he took the Jesuit with him.

Extractions: PRISON REFORM WORKER and EDUCATOR Mrs. Frances Joseph-Gaudet was born in a log cabin in Holmesville, MS, of African American and Native American heritage. She was raised by her grand parents and lived with her brother in New Orleans where she went to public and private schools and attended Straight College. Widowed early, she dedicated her life to social work and worked with the Prison Reform Association assisting prisoners unjustly accused. Starting in 1894 she held prayer meetings, wrote letters, carried messages, and secured clothing for black prisoners and later for white inmates as well. Her never ending encouragement and support of prisoners won the support of prison officials and city authorities, the governor, and the Prison Reform Association. Upon her return from serving as a delegate to the Women's Christian Temperance Union international convention in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1900, she attended hearings of the juvenile court where she assumed responsibility for young blacks arrested for misdemeanor or vagrancy and worked toward their reform. She was the first woman, black or white, to support juvenile prisoners in Louisiana and her efforts helped found Juvenile Court. When her home grew too small for this endeavor, she purchased a farm on Gentilly Road and founded the Colored Industrial Home and School which later became the Gaudet Normal and Industrial School. The school was also a boarding school where working mothers could leave their children. Through various fundraising activities the school expanded to 105 acres with dormitories and many buildings.

The boarding school offers a dance program that includes studies in jazz, ballet and modern dance, plus a dance company, Impulse Dance Theatre. For D'Aquilla, joining the program and performing, has given him an outlet from everyday school life. "It's a counterbalance to the tests and the homework because we create our own steps right there in the studio," he said. The opportunity to dance was not available at traditional schools, D'Aquilla said. Their dance instructor, Randy Allen, encourages his dancers to create a lot of mental imagery while performing. Allen teaches techniques and choreography from his training in New York. Allen said his students have gone on to dance with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, appeared in Broadway productions and joined touring companies in New York.
