John Moore, has already interested himself warmly in various measures effecting the prosperity of Louisiana...It is fortunate at this particular juncture, that the citizens of Louisiana are represented in Congress by a gentleman of so much intelligence, sagacity and experience as Judge Moore. and especially is it a subject of congratulation that he is in no wise infected with those morbid and fastidious constitutional scruples, which kept his predecessor eternally in opposition to the vital interests of the South, and which rendered a hair splitter and abstractionist on questions demanding practical good sense and energetic action." -St. Landry Whig newspaper clipping, January 31, 1852 Following the death of David Weeks in 1834, his widow Mary C. Weeks was kept extremely busy seeing to the management of the plantation holdings of the David Weeks Estate, her children's inheritance. Her brothers advised and assisted her, but she often dealt directly with overseers concerning the sugar plantation on Grand Cote. In addition to decisions on acreage to be planted in cane and food crops, supplies to be purchased, and marketing matters, as a sugar planter, Mary was also responsible for the needs of the slaves on Grand Cote and at the Shadows, over 150 men, women and children. This meant making sure there was sufficient food and clothing for everyone and that adequate housing and medical attention were provided when necessary. In addition to the plantation, Mary also saw to the needs of her children, hiring tutors to teach at the schoolhouse behind the main house and later locating good boarding schools and colleges in which to enroll the five children who survived childhood. Frances, William, Alfred, Harriet and Charles learned reading, writing, arithmetic and geography from tutors at home until in their early teens they went off to boarding schools.

In 1982, Mrs. Lucille Carnahan of the Bayou Folk Museum wrote the text that follows. Our friend Raymond Denis Cloutier of San Ramon, California, a member of our association since the very beginning, travelled to Cloutierville to learn more about the history of this picturesque village and met with Mrs. Carnahan. In addition to introducing l'Association des Cloutier d'Amérique to the southern US, Raymond has been an exceptional recruiter. He also wrote a text on his visit to Cloutierville as well as his meetings with Father Wilber Cloutier and Mrs. Carnahan. The original of this text may be found at the office of the association in Quebec City. Raymond is one of the valued advertisers of our favourite newsletter, La Clouterie. Here then, is "Cloutierville, Louisiana" The origin and early history of this unique little French village has long ago been buried with the early settlers and their descendants. Old family records, letters, diaries, journals and documents that were known to have existed were lost in the floods, the fires that were set during the civil war, or destroyed when older family members died.

Extractions: By Matthew Franck A half-smiling portrait of a deceased radio preacher steals the attention of all who enter the small lobby of Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy. It's the visage of Lester Roloff, who is seen by several Missouri reform schools as a hero in the battle to bring wayward teens to Jesus, while fending off the demons of government control. Mountain Park's Web site proudly says that the school's founder was personally trained by the minister. Elsewhere in Missouri, Agape Boarding School and Thanks to Calvary say they are not Roloff schools, but their leaders praise the pastor's work and display photos of him. Agape has named one of its dorms in Roloff's honor. Roloff, who died in a plane crash in 1982, is perhaps best known for his "Family Altar" radio ministry, which was once broadcast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to more than 140 stations. As his radio ministry grew, the fundamentalist Baptist preacher began reaching out to drug-addicted men and rebellious teens. By the late 1960s, he was taking in dozens of wayward girls, most of whom were pregnant. His philosophy was to immerse the girls in a monastic lifestyle of Bible teachings. He kept the teens in check with the rod of corporal punishment. It was a pattern for dealing with defiant teens that appealed to parents from across the country and is still followed today. But Roloff left another legacy.

On 15 December, 1850, the motherhouse was transferred to Milwaukee, with Mother Mary Caroline Friess as vicar-general of the sisters in America. With money donated by King Louis I of Bavaria, a house was bought; this was absorbed later by Notre Dame Convent on St. Mary's Hill. On 2 January, 1851, St. Mary's parish school was opened and St. Mary's Institute for boarding and day pupils soon afterwards. On 31 July, 1876, owing to its growth and extension, the congregation was divided into two provinces; the Western, with motherhouse at Milwaukee; and the Eastern with motherhouse at Baltimore. A second division of the Western province became necessary, and on 19 March, 1895, the Southern province was formed, with its motherhouse in St. Louis. Training of Members SR. MARY JOSEPHINE

The first superior was sent to the Sisters of Divine Providence at Ribeauvillee, Alsace, to be formed in the religious life, and the rule followed there was made the basis of the new institute, which later received the papal approbation. The congregation was founded primarily for the work of teaching and for the care of the sick so far as consonant with their duties as teachers. The right of corporation was not obtained until 1858, but as early as 1856 the Finthen Sisters had charge of the orphan asylum of Neustadt. At the time of the
