Under the Living Museums program, WPI students carry out IQP work on a variety of rewarding topics with outstanding museums in New England and at selected sites abroad. Projects are available during the regular academic year and during E-term. Students work with WPI faculty advisors in the Department of Humanities and Arts , many of whom have extensive experience in working with museums or historical institutions, as well as with museum staff and professionals. Located twenty miles north of Worcester, Fruitlands is really four museums in one: Bronson Alcott's Fruitlands Farmhouse; Shaker House; American Indian Museum; and Picture Gallery. Museums synthesize knowledge and combine artifacts with primary and secondary documents, often to create an entire social and physical environment. My husband is a student of history and for the past 25 years has dragged me into every antique shop, museum, and old book store we have been able to find in British Columbia. At first it was different, exciting. Then it became boring, until he took me to my first Living Museum. Living museums have been called just about anything from a "Historical Site" to "Amusement Park", but I like the term Living Museum, as it most accurately describes what they they to accomplish. In the simplest terms, a living museum can be anything from a single building to an entire town, which has not only been structurally restored, but people volunteer or are hired to role play a character from the era being presented. Asking these actors a question brings to light their knowledge of where and when they are depicting. As an example, we were in a house at the O'Keefe Ranch in Vernon, and my son commented on the "funny looking telephone". Our guide politely explained that her son went to the east to work with Mr. Bell on his invention, which is why they had one of the newest models. It wasn't "funny looking", it was the latest style.

    Extractions: You get a great feeling for early life in a Shetland crofthouse at the Crofthouse Museum, Dunrossness. This restored thatched crofthouse and watermill is as it would have looked in the 1890's. If the smell of the peat smoke is too much for your nose, then take a sniff of the reest or salt fish, the custodians often dry above the fire. Have a go at setting the moose faa while you are there - a very effective trap! While at the South end of Shetland, why not compare the mill at the Crofthouse Museum with the Quendale Water Mill. The mill was built in 1867 to handle the grain from the Quendale Estate, but it also ground grain for crofters from a very wide surrounding area. The mill still operates in winter when there is enough water to drive to wheel, a video of the workings can be viewed in the attached centre. Imagine the smell and dust when the mill was working at full capacity.

If so, you need not look farther then the Country Living Museums at Dutch Neck Village. There are now two locations. The original site contains farm and shop tools that were used by farmers in the early 1900's. Take A Tour Of Our Museums You will also see early models of washing machines, laundry tubs, etc. There is also a "Victory Bike" from the World War II era and some old tricycles too. The "new" location features a display of glassware, kitchen utensils, World War II era memorabilia, restored antique clocks, sewing machines, and typewriters. On loan to the museum is a collection of Indian artifacts found along the Cohansey River from Bridgeton through Dutch Neck on down to Greenwich. There are many other items too numerous to mention. Be sure to visit both locations.

Norway and Sweden have built living outdoor museums where the life of early ancestors is preserved for observation and study by the descendants.
