    Extractions: Women, as well as men, need direct access to training and extension information to improve their livestock production activities. A 1994 IFAD study of women's livestock management activities points out that, worldwide, livestock extension and training is more often directed to men than to women . Underlying this common pattern is the assumption that because men usually own the livestock, and decision-making and trade in livestock are generally their domain, only men need to be trained. Little account is taken of the fact that women provide much of the labour and expertise. Surveys have shown that women livestock managers not only would require training but also are interested in learning new techniques and ideas. Part of the problem is that most livestock extension agents are men . In Asia only 7% of extension agents are women. A study in 46 African countries found that fewer than 4% of extension workers responsible for advising women are themselves women. Men agents may find it difficult to deal with women, particularly in Muslim and some Hindu and Christian cultures where custom precludes contact between women and men who are not family members. But even when not the case, several studies have found that men staff give preference to contacts with other men. A study in both Kenya and Tanzania, for instance, found that they visited woman-headed households less frequently than man-headed ones. Women tend to prefer women extensionists - as long as they are qualified.

That's the message from a major Livestock Care Conference held June 25 in Edmonton. The conference was sponsored by the producer group Alberta Farm Animal Care Association (AFAC) and the University of Alberta. The more than 150 people attending included a broad cross section of the livestock, academic, research and retail communities. Speakers from across Canada and the U.S. outlined how major food companies are demanding assurance that livestock they purchase are cared for properly in the production and marketing chain. That demand for quality control from food industry leaders is driving aggressive education programs by Canadian livestock producers, and is resulting in a new wave of leading edge research. "Increasingly, the livestock industry is being asked to prove that all animals are treated humanely at all stages of the production and marketing chain," says Susan Church, AFAC manager and co-organizer of the conference. "Clearly, consumers want reassurance that livestock are handled humanely. Animal welfare is associated with food quality, safety and health, and must be an integral component of any quality assurance program."

Targeting 20 districts in the northwest of Bangladesh, the Second Participatory Livestock Development Project will provide training and microfinance to 660,000 households, particularly aimed at the disadvantaged such as the landless and destitute women. More than 900,000 people will benefit from the loans, which will help raise incomes of the very poor by an average of 20%. This is ADB's fourth project in Bangladesh to tackle livestock development. The most recent one was the Participatory Livestock Development Project, approved in 1997. This delivered loans through a financial wholesaler, the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), to a group of 10 nongovernment organizations (NGOs) for microfinanced livestock development packages for poor rural farmers. "The continued development of viable small farmer and small business livestock enterprises is essential to reducing poverty among rural communities," says Brian Fawcett, an ADB Principal Project Economist.

Antibiotics are also used in food animals to enhance their growth rate and feed efficiency that is, increasing the amount of feed that is absorbed by the animal to help ensure that the animals reach their desired market weight on time. Many antibiotics used on animals may be obtained over-the-counter in feed stores and are included in commercially available animal feed. When farm animals consume antibiotics in their feed, they also excrete them. The EPA's National Exposure Research Laboratory says "in some cases as much as 80 percent of antibiotics administered orally pass through the animal unchanged into bacteria-rich waste lagoons and is then spread on croplands as fertilizer leaving the antibiotics available for entry into ground water and runoff into surface waters carrying both the drugs and resistant bacteria or genetic material to other bacteria in soils and waterways." The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agree that the agricultural use of antibiotics is a significant source of antibiotic resistance among foodborne pathogens.
